Do I need special strainer bags or can this be prepared in a coffee maker?

100 micron nylon strainer bag or 'nut milk bag' ...you could use 70 micron, 120 micron, 150 micron depending on preference and the grind of the root powder.

Don't mean to seem stupid but I wanted to ask before I purchase.
I have prepared it in a coffee maker simply by putting water in the carafe and then a strainer bag with medium grind in it and kneading the bag in the water for 10 minutes. But that would be the only way I can think of to make it in a coffee maker. To make grog out of medium grind, the three most common ways are kneading in a bag in water, or using the AluBall (or an alubag or something like that), or blend 'n strain using a blender and a strainer or bag for straining out the makas. The first two are fine for all purposes, but blend n' strain is really only for krunk, IMO.
