Kava Times is a relaxing herbal cafe featuring exotic herbal drinks such as kava, ashwagandha & kratom. Originally opened in Smithtown, NY in 2016 as Village Kava Bar & Smoke Shop, closed in June of 2018, will be reopening Spring of 2020. Founder Carey Prendergast discovered kava at a small kava bar called Kahuna Awa in Deerfield Beach, FL back in 2009. At that time there were many changes going on in his life such as divorce and health issues such as fibromyalgia & chronic Fatigue. The kava bar scene provided just the antidote to his life problems as kava & kratom provided relief from the symptoms that were slowing him down and new friends provided a support system during his spiritual awakening.
Having fallen in love with kava and the abundance of kava bars in South Florida, Carey’s entrepreneurial drive saw him owning his own kava bar some day. In the Spring of 2016, while visiting family in New York, Carey realized that Long Island was void of any places to socialize that didn’t involve alcohol or coffee and decided that Long Island would be a great choice for the kava bar model he had grown to love so much while living in South Florida. And so Village Kava Bar was opened in his hometown of Smithtown, NY. The popularity of kava & kratom in South Florida was undeniable but would the North East region embrace the culture of kava? Indeed it did and over the next 1.5 years Village Kava Bar served up kava and other exotic herbal teas to Long Islanders. Unfortunately the residential neighbors & the Health Department of NY didn’t feel the same love for kava as the rest of the Long Island community and after endless complaints & harassment by neighbors in the rear of the bar, the kava bar was closed down. The health department would not allow us to serve kava any longer. But no worries, the story doesn’t end there.
Carey was determined to re-open and find a new home that could accommodate his customers and the many events that are a part of the kava experience. With a following chomping at the bit for a new space it was time to partner up with someone who could see Carey’s vision for Long Island and could relate to the life changing benefits that a kava bar brings to a community. In steps Adrianne Ragland, Carey’s former customer and currently new partner. Adrianne is so passionate about kava & kratom and realized that her love for Long Island was missing the presence of a kava bar. Adrianne has experienced the heart breaking loss of her brother Brian to the opioid crisis that is nationwide but especially prominent on Long Island. With kratom studies showing that this herb can help with opioid withdrawals and provide a safe alternative for people to socialize and have fun Adrianne was on board for this journey and has played a critical role in phase 2 of the kava bar, this time renamed to Kava Times.
The next phase of this story will be fun to share but for now all we can say is that something awesome is in the works and as we near closer to making an announcement on our new facility we wanted to let all of our great friends who have supported our kava bar know that it will soon be time to raise your shells and say the magic word...Bula!
