    Lightest, least-sedating strains?

Thanks! I ordered myself a bag of KWK's Pouni Ono.

    Lightest, least-sedating strains?

Hi all - been a while since I checked in here. Stopped drinking Kava a year or two ago because it was only making me sleepy, but I'm hoping to ease back into my grog. At least a couple of years ago, BKH's Fu'u was one of the lighter, less-sedating strains. As the Kava market and vendors...

    Why do YOU drink Kava?

Great question. Initially it was to help me cope with the constant, non-fun socializing that my partner and I are obliged to do in our professional lives - she and I both work in the non-profit/art world. Now I mostly find it extremely helpful as a productivity aid. My last hour at work (when...

Ohh man. Need some relief from that kava flava

Agreed, including the pinching-of-the-nose. I tried blending in a sprig of fresh mint for a bit, but I think I was just fooling myself. And I'm guessing most kava vets don't use any admixture with their grog. The trick, as kapmcrunk elaborates, is just learning not to breathe through your...

How to get the desired reaction out of kava...

In my experience an empty stomach is every bit as important as the strain and quality of the kava root. My breakthrough with kava came four or so years ago when I finally figured out it was necessary to go for a good three hours or so without eating beforehand. I'm a lifelong beanpole and...

    Kava Preparation Boiling Kava.

I remember this study. It's the main reason I started boiling my brew.

    What are you drinking tonight?

Solomon's, around 2.5tbs. Amazing stuff that lingers in one's head for a good while.

    Dermopathy question: sipping vs. chugging

Is there any reason that sipping two shells of kava over an hour or so would be easier on your skin than chugging said two shells all at once? Odd question, I realize, but I have embarrassingly little sense of the chemistry of the digestion of kava. Any of you science-literate kavasseurs...

Dermopathy Contest! Who's had the worst?

You win, yepimonfire. Wow. I'm a daily drinker in an extremely dry part of the country but the most I've ever dealt with is a bit of flaky skin on my ankles.

    Duration of effects

I'd concur with those of you reporting under an hour for kava's most pronounced effects. Its subtle, uninhibited social effects seem to linger for me for at least an hour longer, however. I used to be in the chug-it-all-at-once camp, but now I give the second half of my brew a good fifteen or...

    Kava and Massages

Yeah, thanks for the tip! Now the trick is getting it into my aging diva of a cat. How much do you give your cats at a time?

    Does Anybody here train?

I've been running five or six times a week for many, many years now. Unless I've really overdone it the night before (in which case I'm simply too exhausted to run), I've never noticed any effect. There've been a few times when I've run, like, an hour-and-a-half after drinking. Not as bad as...

Instant VS Root powder. Better Value?

Bert07 - You're not the only one with trouble putting it down. Admittedly, I actually was fine with it until I overdid it that one time, and wound up doubled over the toilet. Such fun. It hasn't tasted the same since.

Instant VS Root powder. Better Value?

Huh. That's completely different from my experience. For me 1 tablespoon of instant barely equals the effects of a brew made from 2 tablespoons of root. Maybe it's 'cause I blend the hell out of my root before straining.

Instant VS Root powder. Better Value?

I love BKH's instant for traveling, and it's amazing for what it can do in a pinch. But dry root is way more cost effective. Instant is expensive - it'd take me, I dunno, like ten times as long to go through the equivalent amount of root. Also, instant's effects are just not nearly as...

how long do you steep your brew?

Okay, so normally I'll try to let my kava mixture (root powder + lecithin + water) steep overnight, or for at least for several hours, before blending and kneading/straining it. There are always those occasions when I want some grog right away, however, and I'll maybe let the mixture steep...

Kava Science So...what evidence do we have that heat destroys kavalactones?

I have accidentally let my brew start boiling a few times. (Not sure of the actual temperature, but it was bubbling pretty vigorously, if not exactly roiling.) Anyway, its effects were just as strong.

    Going for longest krunk record

Yeah, this to me is the key to and problem with day drinking in general. I've drunk kava in the morning, but, unless I continuously drink more, there are gonna be those long, bleary, red-eyed, washed-out stretches of daylight to contend with. A lot of it of course has to do with my body's...
