I should probably preface every post I make with "At the risk of sounding pretty weird..." or you could just assume that preface whenever you see my name....

So far when people approach me about drinking kava I recommend that they only do so if there is a specific goal they have in mind, and tailor the project towards that goal.

For me it was expanding my dream life. I have for a long time been into dreams and it was the first and most profound effect I discovered when I first starting drinking kava and continues to be my most profound joy. With kava I have dreams which are more intricate, more vivid, more coherent, more lifelike, and the visual resolution is much higher, like going from 480i to 1080p. Like XBox One vs old games on a 486 PC. This is also true with lucid dreams, where the ones with kava have much more natural lighting and environments, almost exactly like real life whereas BK the lighting in lucid dreams was bizarre and unnatural, like a stadium when all the lights are on. Also, BK in lucid dreams the sky was always pitch black if you looked up even if it was the middle of the day, but with kava the lucid sky looks like a real sky, with clouds, even.

Anyway, I have noticed with kava that I am having more frequent nightmares. In fact, I rarely ever had nightmares before Kava (BK), maybe one every three or four years. But since kava, I have had more nightmares, maybe once every two weeks or so. However, and it is a huge however, nightmares on kava are not like regular nightmares. They do not trouble me, and they resolve, usually with a happy ending (my wife has noticed this effect, as well). e.g. in one recent one I was outside and there was a huge bear in the area and I was terrified. The terror was the nightmare. But I whispered "Call 5-1-1" over and over and this calmed the bear and he left peacefully and I was fine. Other nightmares I have experienced with kava all have a similar pattern: problem ---> resolution, happy ending.

It's very similar to how troubling thoughts get handled with kava: I still have bad or troubling thoughts just as before, but they get dissolved almost instantly and do not trouble me. Same with feelings of anger or irritation or the sudden urge to say something snarky or obnoxious or unkind.

It's very reminiscent to me of the skill one develops practicing mindful meditation where if you have a distracting thought that pops up, as is pretty much inevitable, you consciously recognize the thought and its existential validity but you tell it now is not the time and escort it to the door and scoot it outside so you can focus on what you want to focus on right now, and lather rinse repeat as necessary.

I'm wondering if others have experienced this phenomenon of paradoxically happy nightmares? Is it permanent? Is there a reason for it, do we understand this mechanism and how it works, if it is indeed "a thing" ? Or am I just nuts?

Personally I consume cannabis frequently so I don't have very intense dreams ... but! When I do they are usually very real and intense.. but I haven't noticed this particularly! I'm going to have to stay alert to it next time I sleep ... I wonder when that will be :p

Kava increased lucid dreams for me big time, which I assume came along with the sleep benefits of kava. This increases even when I drink yerba mate regularly. But on to the nightmare side of things. I have what I call Wake Up Nightmares. It feels like my internal clock wants to make sure I get up in time and I will have weird dreams
or mildly scary nightmares which wake me up before my alarm every has a chance to sound off.
I have also noticed plant teacher type dreams from Kava where it is sort of like telling me to stop behaving this way or gives me a different way to looks at things instead of taking a one-sided approach to a topic.

Ah yes, I get wake up nightmares but then that leads to lucid dreams when I get back to sleep. I find lucid dreams are much more likely if I wake up in the middle of the night (from a happy nightmare, e.g.) then use affirmations to say "I'm going to have a lucid dream when I go back to sleep" and then go right back to sleep. For some reason my lucid dreams always happen in the second half of a dream cycle rather than the first, and are at least twice as likely if I wake up first and then go back to sleep with an affirmation.

And yes, I've also had kava do the gentle, loving nag with me. I often feel that kava is like a spirit or a person or some sort of being that lives within it, capable of thinking and volition and action. A very loving spirit, if I'm not mistaken. That's what it feels like to me, anyway.

Hello everyone I'm new in this forum. Does kava helps me to reduce my nightmares?
Unfortunately it might have the reverse effect and could potentially give you more nightmares and/or make them worse. For most people kava has the effect of making dreams more vivid (also longer lasting and more memorable). And that can mean that nightmares are more vivid.

The situation with kava and nightmares is exacerbated by alcohol, I do know that. So if you are prone to nightmares and have been drinking any alcohol within the last three days, I think kava would be strongly contraindicated.

One way to help prevent nightmares is to never fall asleep on your back. For some reason that has an effect.

In general, an occasional nightmare is a healthy thing, a way for the brain to process difficult things. But if they bother you or are frequent, that might be something you want to consult a doctor about.

Theoretically, because nightmares are the experience of extreme anxiety while asleep and kava is anxiolytic, kava *should* reduce nightmares. But I don't think it works that way, or at least, not sure it is that simple.

It could be that if one were to go strictly alcohol free for several months and then start a daily course of treatment with low doses of kava, e.g. 1 or 2 TBS medium grind trad prepped per day, for 6 months or so it might reduced nightmares. But who knows? I don't think there is any research on this at all. My inclination would be to go very easy, very low doses, very slow, if at all, and drop it immediately at the first sign it might be making things worse.

Cannabis you would also think would enhance nightmares but is an amazing Medicine for dreamless sleep and ptsd reduction in soldiers.

Chamomile is a good plant for nightmares. I don't have experience with this but others do and it's in the literature of old.
Mugwort in my room as I sleep causes intense dreams. It seems to make them more relavant. Less ambiguous and straight to the point of how I'm feeling.
Kava when I'm Krunk and going to bed I feel as though i dream less.

I usually have nice pragmatic dreams with Kava. With alcohol, I have a tendency to have nitemares. I think I already posted the one where I'm at the golf course on the first tee and I have already whiffed the ball 5 times. I can do without that kind of anxiety.

different varieties of kava effect my dreamworld very differently. A little off the topic but when I'm with Kava I never feel afraid of anything, always thought it would be interesting to test by going into a scary house or deep in the woods with kava as my only guide. I really don't think I would have any fear of anything around me but at the same time still be on top of things lol

I am also very into dreams and I have noticed kava is really an amazing dream enhancer , I also agree with the nightmares when I started drinking kava I had more frequent nightmares but they do usually turn out good ,it’s like kava is there to guide me to a happy ending .I think that is one of Kava’s greatest benifits is it helps us get through our nightmares , cause I believe nightmares is the minds way of trying to get our attention and telling us we need to fix or change something and with kava I feel like it helps me be guided to learn and overcome my nightmares therefore healing the problem that the nightmare was trying to tell me about .

I haven't found any of this yet. And I look forward to it, because I love vivid, lucid, memorable dreaming! But I did dream about a Kava experience last night! I dreamt that I was anxious about being in RT (in real life, I'm trying NOT to be anxious about it). I bought a huge amount of medium grind, in person, from someone local. They had samples of something you were supposed to put under your tongue and I was hoping he would offer me a sample. He did, but then I woke up. Maybe that was the resolution, kind of? I'd rather have had the full experience, even just in the dream. But still, he did offer it. I love the thought of not feeling afraid of anything too! Is that also common?

it's fairly common.

What was the sublingual stuff? With kava, you can go sublingual with CO2 extract, or flakes like I make at home, or with instant....

Haha! I have no idea. Honestly I think my dreaming mind made it up. It looked like medium grind, only much more coarse, with whitish clumps mixed in. I started to ask, but I think that's when I woke up.

it is not recommended to try sublingual with medium grind but you can make a homemade instant and use that sublingual. Your dream grind sounds like some awas out there....

I'll have the pyrones with some pepper, please.
I love kava dreams whether they are the standard, lucid, lovely, weird or nightmares. I do have nightmares more often than before Kava but 1. I dream 99% more and 2. They don’t even phase me. I wake up and think to myself, that was stupid, didn’t that thing figure out that I am bullet proof? I go back to sleep and I am instantly transported to never never land with water falls and rivers of muddy water that tastes like Mahakea.

I had a lucid one last night, it wasn't quite a nightmare but it had things tied up in my mind expressed in a really abstract way that was really interesting. Tripled up on very potent heady kava which by the way isn't something I wanna do all the time as it was a little too much even if initially I felt amazing. It all felt very real but of course in dream world nothing tends to make much sense so it was still weird. That always tends to happen and I'm just dealing with some things right now so I just expect it though.

Me and some girl were going out to eat and it was like some sort of asian buffet place that looked strangely traditional for what they typically are. That's where the normal ends, we're walking to my seat and then I lose her. Now I'm looking around the street and side walk and come across someone I mistake as her and tell her what's up but then after turning away I lose her too. It didn't even occur to me to just call the person for some reason. Now I'm just getting frustrated so I see another friend coming along the way and he was joking with me and stuff so I get him to come along I think without even really mentioning the situation and I can't recall why but we went into the forest and got lost till it was night time when it felt like it was day just minutes before. Behind him before I lost him now there was this huge brown bear about 4 times both our size so we both ran like we never ran before. I was so confused because now it's pitch black and I have no idea where I was until I decided to walk up a little ways and come across a house that magically popped up apparently and get taken in and cared for a bit. It gets fuzzy from there after some conversation and playing some video games.
