Can you combine Kava and Viagra without any adverse health affects? There are no relevant results or doctors' opinions on Google, only a bunch of spammy blogs.

I can't imagine there would be any conflicts. I can't recommend for or against it though.
Alright, thanks. Could you clarify a bit as to why there wouldn't, though? If there's any scientific jargon/health jargon that you could use to further elaborate, no problem. There was only one page on Google that didn't list Kava as interacting with Viagra but did list Kava as interacting with Xanax, and sifting through the interactions list at "Home > New To Kava? > What should I be cautious of or avoid while drinking kava?" there is also no mention of Kava combined with Viagra, so thanks in advance to everyone who can chime in with their two cents.

You have to deal with the fact that kava is relatively unstudied, compared to more common substances or FDA approved drugs. If the information isn't on this site or widely available online, it's because the information doesn't definitively exist...as far as we know.

Typically, other sedatives aren't recommended in combination with kava (Xanax, alcohol, Valium...) because of the increased sedation or negative side effects it could bring on -- especially ones that utilize the same liver enzymes while metabolizing, such as P450

I know the most common concern for combination with Viagra are drugs that lower your blood pressure. I think kava may slightly lower blood pressure, but not significantly...I can't remember for sure -- that would be the 1st thing I'd look into if I were you.

Yeah, I'd second the blood pressure concern. But again, I don't see there being any reason for a conflict. The reason Kava and Xanax don't mix is because they have similar purposes/effects. Kava is a more natural, healthier, and probably more effective treatment for anxiety. I have actually taken Viagra before (now you all know that, great) and I did notice some slight psychoactive effects - like a kind of discoloring in my vision. So perhaps that could be a concern, I'm not sure. I only tried it a couple times and I think my wife would probably kill me if I took it again. LOL. It's really pretty much the last thing I need in my life.

But isn't it generally known that it's bad to mix herbal remedies with western medications?

I don't really know. It's not really an area of expertise for me. I have been under the impression that a lot of western medications are derived from herbs as well, so there's not a complete dichotomy.

As a healthcare professional I recommend cialis > viagra
And no grapefruit with either.
The interaction can cause priapism and you don't want that.
Really doubt there would be any interaction between either of these and kava. I'm not sure why you take viagra and it's definitely none of my business. Just thinking if it's really a psychological reason perhaps you'll be just fine with just kava?

If the kava don't do the trick, I would try cialis/viagra, just take half and wait an hour or so.
Cialis works for up to 36 hrs where as viagra works for 4hrs or so.

I don't know the answer, because I don't think is has been specifically studied. But there are 2 things you usually need to worry about when you consider drug interactions. First, do the drugs act by the same mechanism? Viagra acts on nitric oxide receptors in the penis. Kava acts on various neuroreceptors in the brain, so there is no danger of interaction there. Second, are the drugs metabolized by the same enzymes in the liver? Viagra is metabolized by Cytochrome P450 3A4 (major) and 2C9 (minor). Kavalactones are metabolized by CYP 1A2, 2C9, 2C19, 2D6, 3A4, 4A9/11. (See: is drinking kava every night unhealthy?). So, yes since Viagra is metabolized by some of the same enzymes as kava, it is possible that drinking kava could cause the level of Viagra in your system to be increased over what it would be when you take it without kava. As @Capitán Bastos noted, there is a risk of priapism in this case. ("If you have an erection for more than 4 hours....it will be rather painful and much less fun than it sounds...") So I would be very careful with that combination.

And if you want to know how they cure priapism...
The nicest way is to inject "stuff" ( yes that is the medical term) directly into the penis with a huuuuuuuuge needle.
Just sayin'

And if you want to know where the word priapism comes from...

It comes from the Ancient Greek God named Priapus,
"...In Greek mythology, Priapus (/praɪˈeɪpəs/; Greek: Πρίαπος, Priapos) was a minor rustic fertility god, protector of livestock, fruit plants, gardens and male genitalia. Priapus is marked by his oversized, permanent erection.."

Seriously. I'm not making this up.

That's awesome.

To answer the question I agree that I doubt it would affect the viagra. I would look up as much as you can about viagras biological effect Ecspecially enzymes that break it down and use your intuition .

I did that above. I would not recommend using intuition when it comes to any drug combination. :)

I just want to make sure everyone's understanding of what priapism is is rock solid:

"Priapism is a prolonged erection of the penis. The unwanted, persistent erection isn't caused by sexual stimulation or arousal, and priapism is usually painful.

Priapism is an uncommon condition that needs immediate medical attention. Prompt treatment for priapism is usually needed to prevent tissue damage that could result in the inability to get or maintain an erection (erectile dysfunction)....

"Priapism ... is a known side effect of a number of drugs. The following drugs can sometimes cause priapism:
  • Oral medications used to manage erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra) ...
Ischemic priapism can cause serious complications. The blood trapped in the penis is deprived of oxygen. When an erection lasts for longer than four hours, this oxygen-poor blood can begin to damage or destroy tissues in the penis. As a result, untreated priapism may cause:
  • Erectile dysfunction, the inability of the penis to become or stay erect with sexual arousal
  • Disfigurement of the penis ...
Ischemic priapism — the result of blood not being able to exit the penis — is an emergency situation that requires immediate treatment. This treatment usually begins with a combination of draining blood from the penis and using medications.
  • Aspiration. After your penis is numbed with local anesthetic, excess blood is drained from it, using a small needle and syringe. As part of this procedure, the penile veins may also be flushed with a saline solution. ...This treatment may be repeated until the erection ends.
  • Medication. A medication ... may be injected into the spongy tissue of the penis. This drug constricts blood vessels that carry blood into the penis. ... This treatment may be repeated over several hours if necessary. ...
  • Surgery. If other treatments aren't successful, a surgeon may implant a device that reroutes blood flow (a shunt) so that blood can move through your penis normally." Source
Priapism: hardly a joking matter.

Why is it that every statue I've seen of him, his penis is broken off at the crotch line?

Behold priapus's theme song:

"I warn you, boy, you will be screwed; girl, you will be fucked;

a third penalty awaits the bearded thief.

If a woman steals from me, or a man, or a boy,

let the first give me her cunt, the second his head, the third his buttocks.

My dick will go through the middle of boys and the middle of girls,

but with bearded men it will aim only for the top."

Greek religion was just so charming, wasn't it?
