Kava In The Blood

Bula,

The President of the United Nations General Assembly for the 71st session (2016-2017) was voted in today. He is Peter Thompson.
Thompson wrote a book once, titled Kava in the Blood.

It's not a book about kava, and probably not of much interest to anyone outside the Pacific, but if you're interested in Fiji, it's a good read.

IIRC, he does mention that while posted to Taveuni Island as District Officer in the 70's, he started a kava farm in the hills of Qila (about an hours drive from his home at the government station at Waiyevo by the roads of the time). Unfortunately it was a complete failure as upon maturity, the kava plants grew legs and walked away before he had a chance to harvest them.

Yes...that's fairly common even these days. A friend of mine planted half a hectare of boronguru 30 mins outside of Vila and sure enough when they were 3 years old they uprooted and went for a walk whilst he was in PNG for a week. Must be soul destroying.
