Welcome to the forums, @Saoirse!

If you want the full anti-anxiety effects of kava, you should look into powdered root. An easy jumping-on point would be the Gourmet Hawaiian Kava micronized sampler. Micronized is simply mixed in water and chugged, saving you 15-30 minutes of preparation in a straining bag kneading and squeezing.

That said, my favorite way to consume kava is with traditional prep. It's what the islanders do (albeit with dried kava root as opposed to their fresh) and has given me the best results. I too suffer from lifelong anxiety (social and otherwise) as well as depression (still kicks me in the ass every now and again) and kava has been a godsend.

I am definitely looking into the different options... I am VERY interested in the "specialty" items as well... I found out about the chocolate bars and shakes last night!!! SOOOO many options!! I have anxiety attacks when away from home and the chocolate bars would be so convenient for a quick fix!! Besides the fact that I am a chocoholic!

I also found out that there is a Kava bar in Wilmington, NC.. This is only about 90 miles away and we have several friends we visit there.. I've already told him I MUST go next time we visit!!! There needs to be one in Fayetteville so I can go anytime I want! LOL

It absolutely amazes me how well known Kava has become since I found it years ago... Who knew?

What else would be good to mix with the micro? I drink sweet tea but can't stand plain water.. I know Kava has a flavor of it's own so I'm not sure what would be a good mix and what would be an absolutely disgusting mix... lol

Welcome to the forums! The Ozia Kava Candies are also a very nice little pick-me-up during the workday.
The chocolate bars are absolutely delicious. I just now tried the Kava King Capuccino shake and it's very very tasty--will review for results later (may be skewed as I'm home sick today.) For a pre-mix, this is my favorite so far tastewise--no need for a chaser.
When mixing up a batch of micro, I generally use a low cal fruit juice (with lemon or lime) or diet ginger ale (with lemon or lime). I still have a chaser, so maybe it's time to just start making it with water and chasing.

I've had only a muted response after chocolate. In terms of extract-based preparations, I prefer Kalm with Kava's Concentrate mixed with water, which has a pretty high impact for extract-based kava for me.

There needs to be one everywhere.

Well, for thousands of years, just Pacific Islanders!

IMHO, everything mixed with kava is disgusting and just bulks up the amount of gross stuff I have to drink to get the same effect. I've made peace with the flavor of kava and now I *appreciate* it but still don't really enjoy it. I think making your peace and saying "BULA!" and downing the whole "shell" (4-6oz) of drink is the Best Way.

OK... Since I'm basically a noob with this wonderful root, I have a question... I'm looking at all the different sites and the reviews y'all have for them, trying to figure out the best stuff to get without starving us for this pay period... I'm noticing that some have actually taken the powder and instead of kneading it in water in the traditional manner, they just put some in whatever drink of their choosing and "bottoms up!"... I know about instant but that's not what I am talking about.. I was just looking at the reviews for Nakamal At Home - Stone Kava... I'm confused!

You can do that, at the risk of terrible kava farts and nausea. The reason for the knead + strain is because there's a lot of fiber, starch and other garbage in there that you don't necessarily want to drink. But it does work.

From what I am reading on the reviews, some Kava chocolates are definitely better than others..

Yes!!! Yes there does!!

Again, reading the reviews of the different sites that offer noble Kava and the different products that they have, some are better tasting than others... Of course, each of us has our own likes/dislikes and what may taste horrible to one might taste wonderful to another.. Jut have to find the one that each of us likes the best and stick with it.. :)

Economical choices for kava root are:
- Kalm with Kava - Borogu - $35/lb.
- Kavaboy - $32/lb.
Gourmet Hawaiian Kava is excellent, but tends to be pricier.

That was going to be my next question.. Well, sorta... Here is what I am looking for...

1. more mild taste.. I want my husband to enjoy it with me but the "peppery" description has me a bit concerned... He does not like anything "spicy".. Definitely need something that will pass his palate!
2. heady and heavy in the mid-range... Don't need anything SUPER strong but definitely want a nice warm fuzzy feeling of good Kava...
3. Sedative effect in the mid range.. Both of us have a hard time sleeping so something to be a nice and relaxing without the "morning hangover" feeling would be perfect!! Definitely want to enjoy the effects for a while though so nothing that will make us pass out! lol
4. Anti-anxiety/antidepressant HIGH!! This is an absolute MUST, specifically for me!
5. long lasting effects.. Definitely want to get more bang for my buck..

I have been looking over reviews until my eyes crossed and my head hurts! I think I have completely confuse myself... I know I will be getting either Regal Ava or Deep Awa e juice from Noble Cloud and I will probably order a few chocolate bars from Kava Chocolate... These will be great for when I am on the go and need a quick pick me up for my anxiety.. I need to fill in the gap... I was THINKING maybe getting one of Kava King's shake mixes, specifically chocolate or cappuccino since those would easily pass my husband's palate but not sure how good the effects are based on the few reviews I saw... There weren't many... Choices are great but I'm so confused!!! LOL

If you are very concerned about taste, you could try Kalm with Kava concentrate. It tastes like orange soda, and has the effects you are looking for I think. It's made from borongoru, which I find to be a good anxyiolytic.

I second verticity's suggestion for kalm with kava. Excellent sedative, as well as a great anti-anxiety effect. Taste is 10/10.

Welcome @Saoirse :)
So far as Nicotine and Vaping goes,I know quite a bit about this and agree that you would be best without them. I was pretty bad Anxiety-wise and smoked like a chimney til 2011 when I started Vaping.
Yes the Beta Carbolines are an MAOI so that adds to the calming effect. Nicotine is actually not a bad anti-depressant and can relax if not overdone.
Do a search on Tobacco Steep E-Juice. You can DIY or buy from a Vendor that uses organic Tobacco only. This way you are getting TWA or Total Whole Alkaloids.
I don't want to make you more jittery, but next time you light up bear in mind you are inhaling all this!

Compare that to Vaping what most do being USP grade VG,PG,Nicotine in PG or VG and food grade flavours.
If you go the TWA e-juice or Steeps, then you will find that sweet spot.
It's not hard to DIY either as VG alone will extract quite a lot. You just need to let it steep for a few weeks or so and use only Certified Organic Tobacco.
Never purchased any pre-made but have made some and it IS noticeable in effects i.e that which is lacking in normal e-juice is there ;)
Here's a few:

Do you meditate or use self-hypnosis?

Great tools to see what's ticking away in the subconscious mind...you'd be surprised.
Use them often enough and you will learn to ignore the chatter which will reflect in your waking life.

Take care and cheers,

Thank you Kavo... Eventually I will get to a point where I can taper the nic level down or even possibly cut it out but that will not be anytime in the very near future.. Nicotine is like caffeine to me... I'm a "junkie" for them both.. LOL I fully admit that... I've just over the past few days gotten down to 3-4 analogs per day and I only light up when I start tensing my hands because I can feel the anxiety building.. I've learned the very early signs so it's easier to control since I do not take medication for it.. I do enjoy vaping but as I've stated in a previous comment, it terrifies me because I know what it does to me, or more like what quitting smoking does to me... As for meditating, that's easier said than done... Between my mind always going in a million directions at once, 3 dogs, 4 cats and a 16 yr old in a very small 2br trailer, I don't get much quiet time... However, I will soon be building my own alter outside, which will my little quiet place... I very much look forward to that! We also have a bamboo grove out there, which once this year's growth has filled out, will be completely isolated in the center so that will be another option for me to get some quiet time... All in time though... For right now, I have to do with what I can and what I have or can get... This is where Kava comes in.. :)

@Saoirse , no problems.
I know where you're coming from and don't beat yourself up for the Nicotine as it's not really a problem. It's not doing you any harm as it's actually a Nootropic especially when it binds with Acetylcholine. In fact new classes of A/D's are being made based on Nicotine for it's properties. The tar and additives do the damage (crazy list hey?)
I think you'll find that some types of Kava will help you immensely to quiet the inner chatter which leads to the constant "self-checking" prevalent with those who suffer Anxiety as well.
If meditation was "easy" then everyone would be hooked on it ;) I'm sure in time you'll find your space and hopefully get into it as it is one of the healthiest things anyone can do esp. these days with the day to day pressures. Anyone can do it if they don't "try",if you "try" then that isn't meditating ;)
Stick with the suggestions given on the Varieties and give them a go when you can as these wonderful people all know exactly what they say. They have all pretty much been where you are.

I'm glad you're not on Med's too as this new start will be much easier for you.

Stay calm and let us all know how you go with Kava!

Honestly, I despise doctors and hospitals... More than half of my family have died because of them and I've seen even more friends suffer because of them... I don't go unless I am in so much pain that I can't stand it anymore... I have an extremely high pain tolerance and stubborn as hell so that don't happen but maybe once every few years... I'd much rather find a natural alternative and live for today!
