Has anyone come across any info about kava causing/triggering pancreatitis? Im not trying to blame the lovely root, and Im hoping its not to blame! Last month I randomly came down wirh acute pancreatitis and it lasted about a week. Im a little weery as to what caused it since i dont drink alcohol and i eat a pretty healthy clean diet. And since i have not touched any kava and im sad! Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Bula

If so, it would be the first time I've ever heard of it. I feel like we would have run into this if it were a side effect from kava.

Thats kind of my thought process too, but I just had to see what the community thought. Id hate for it to be true and i go and chug a sesh, and end up in the same boat!

I fully, 100% support erring on the side of caution. Our well-being comes first.

On the same note, you would be surprised at the number of people who were drinking kava, came down sick, and went crazy trying to figure out how the kava was making them feel that way only to discover it was the flu or a cold. Now, I know that pancreatitis isn't even close to a cold, but the scenario could have lined up to create the coincidence.

Also, here's a thread that's similar in nature

Yeah, and to be fair, the day the pancreatitis symptoms started, I dont think I had drank kava for a few days then. So it must have been my anxious mind racing to find reason. Crazy! Either way, i think ill give some kava a try later tonight. Thanks!

In general kava doesn't seem to affect the pancreas. How do you usually consume kava? Certainly the indigestible central part of the waka root, the makas, can cause very bad stomach pain for some.

fwiw I found some cases of people who claimed that kava cured their pancreatitis, even chronic pancreatitis. Not sure I find them entirely credible, though I could easily imagine someone with bad stomach pain, caused by inflammation but the person thought it was pancreatitis and when kava reduced the gut inflammation they credited kava but for "curing pancreatitis" rather than what it actually would have done, reducing inflammation and this reducing or eliminating gut pain.

I agree with the good cap'n that it is infinitely better to err on the side of caution in a case like this, but you'd want to find out for sure, so if there were a way to go back to drinking kava you could.

I'm assuming the pancreatitis was diagnosed by a doctor? Did they identify anything wrong with blood labs? Did they do any kind of diagnostic imaging of your pancreas or related organs? Did they identify any possible causes? It seems very unlikely that kava consumption would directly cause pancreatitis.

Yeah, i was diagnosed by my doc. Because of blood results. And then he required me to get a full abdominal ultrasound, and anoher set of blood tests. Ultra sound was totally fine, no damage or stones of anykind, and blood tests came back normal. So im thinking they caught it as it was settling down and they never really decided a cause.
