"In an Otahuhu street virtually in the shadow of the Southern Motorway a couple of Saturday nights ago, an unusual party was in progress.
It was at the back of a block of flats in an outbuilding that plainly does daytime service as a backyard gym. The area outside the sliding door was an obstacle course of resistance-training equipment; a fearsome punching bag hung from the rafters. Inside, the partygoers sat on the floor, some using legless plastic chairs for back support. A couple of guitarists whose skills far outstripped those of normal Saturday night strummers led voices in those haunting, plangent harmonies that raise the roofs of Tongan churches on Sundays. Hymns alternated with upbeat songs that were punctuated by sudden outbursts of dancing. The singers headed outside with casual regularity to have a smoke but alcohol was conspicuous by its absence. In its place, at the head of the room, tended by the only woman among three dozen men, was a large wooden bowl filled with muddy liquid known as kava..."
