There is a lot of " brandless" kava around and not all of it is rubbish. If you can find a local/regional source (often Fijian Indian) and tell him what you want you can often get a good deal. I get great Vav'au kava sent to me by friends in Tonga (when the bulk stash I collect personally each year runs out) at $US13/kg plus postage.
I just got 5kg of brandless Fiji pure waka (fine lateral roots)from Auckland NZ (dry but unground) for $US 33/kg. He posts overseas. Don't have his contact now but will post his email. It is good, honest, unadulterated noble kava.
