Kava fact of the day: An odd patent on kava



Today’s fact of the day is short, yet interesting, and regarding a patent filed in regards to kava. There are many patents on the registry for kava. US Patent search for kava was run and when the search term “kava” is used, 840 results are returned. This means that out of those 840 results “kava” is referenced at least once. When searching for the words “kava” and “piper methysticum” together, a total of 179 results were returned [1].


In 1995 the cosmetic company L’Oréal Paris filed and was granted a patent regarding kava and it’s use for dandruff, hair loss, and anti-aging [2].
