What's new

Bit worried I've started off at the deep end!

Since I wanted a strain with good muscle relaxant effects, I ordered a KG of Boroguru. This will be my first time with Kava, other than a small 20g test batch of some random root I had a week or so back.

I've noticed on some threads a lot of people say it's not best to start off with the stronger strains with Kava, and that the ones with high DHM content can often cause nausea etc. Is there anything I should be careful of when I start drinking the stuff? Is it best to start out light with smaller amounts and see how it goes?

I've ordered the Fijan strainer back which if I remember correctly can help with the nausea because it filters it really well, although I might be completely wrong there. If there's any tips you can give on how to prevent the nausea (if I get any) that would be appreciated!

I think you'll be OK, but I cannot go by personal experience. Black Sands is considered a "starter" kava by Nakamal@home, and is a mixture of boroguru, melo melo, and borogu, from what I've been told. I'm not sure if what you have is 100% lateral or not, but even if it is, it would still be considered a Nobel kava outright, and thus by definition safe and suitable for daily drinking. (caveat kava - definitions apply to words, not to experiences).

The last week or so I have been toss 'n washing (mixing the root powder with juice and drinking straight up) the super fine Boroguru grind almost exclusively. Up to 4 or 5 Tbls per night. I have experienced no nausea, in fact its been less than when I make grog. The only negative effect has been some increase in dermopathy and an insatiable thirst the next day.

I think you will be fine. Remember, you can make your kava as strong or as weak as you wish. Think of it as 151 proof liquor. You can mix a weak drink, or a strong drink. The initial strength of the booze really makes no difference.

As far as starting off with a strong strain, one school of thought says that you will overcome reverse tolerance and begin feeling the effects of kava more quickly. This is a plus in my opinion.

If I start feeling nauseous, which only happens if I push the limits, I eat a piece of bread or something and it clears right up. I've heard that ginger will kill nausea, but I haven't tested this myself.

For me pushing too hard on high DHM kavas can cause some upset, so don't over do it the first time or two would be my advice (of course I didn't take my advice and maxed until sick, but I am an mule headed). However staying persistent to get over the reverse tolerance is critical. Straining definitely helps me, so highly recommended for those this a sensitive stomach.

That's good advice - cheers.

I think I'll be able to avoid nausea if I have the figian strainer and also I'll have a bit of food handy incase it does hit me.

I'll be sure to stay persistent with it as well - just waiting on my delivery now USPS are taking their time! I'm pretty impatient with things :(

Boroguru is like an intermediate kava. I wouldn't call it a starter but it's perfectly fine for beginners.
