Hey guys, one thing I do whenever I drink kava is have a bowl of some sort of light snack sitting around. A session for me is about 4 shells of kava, prepared with about 8 tbsp of kava root, though that ratio varies all the time. and I'll typically have chips or fresh cut fruit, something light and solid in taste. Not too much, though, because eating *too* much kind of kills the 'euphoric' effects and in turn will make me very sleepy very quickly. Just a light snack to chew on to either

a) Get a pungent strong taste of kava out of my mouth and/or,
b) Help absorption of the kava. For the latter I typically stick with fresh cut mangoes or pineapple, and only start eating after my second shell. I've got this down to a science. lol.

I was just wondering if you guys do the same? and what kind of snakcks/food do you prefer with drinking kava? (smiley: happy)

*note I don't mean food after kava, I mean something to liven up your stomach during a kava session. (smiley: smokin)

No, I don't really do that. Some foods taste better or different but I don't have snacks around on purpose for after drinking kava.

So far I haven't felt the need to bring food into the ritual. I've had to remind myself to eat something at some point. I think kava might be a nice tool for fasting even... I may do a juice and kava fast..... Not that it hinders anything, I just don't feel hungry.

Yeah, it's not even so much for hunger in my case though, it just 'feels nice' to get a little something else in my stomach full of kava and gives my numbing mouth something to sense. Plus, along with eating mangoes, I have a tropical sunset curtain over my main window, feels like the tropics (smiley: glasses)

I have the problem where I'm always hungry. I have a high metabolism and could eat all day long. This makes it hard for me to drink kava on an empty stomach but I try my best. It's all I can do to wait until I have a shell or two down before I start snacking again. I like to eat carrot sticks with hummus, cheese and crackers, fruit is nice too.

Cheese and crackers is awesome after a few shells! I just gotta pace myself because there is definitely a limit to how much you can eat without destroying the effects. For me anyway.

Although I have been eating prunes after kava recently, I don't strictly need them. I am blessed enough to be a "sub-taster," which means that bitter foods are less bitter for me than they are for most people. The downside is that I often use too much salt to bring out the flavor of foods, which isn't good for a man of my age.

One of my favorite things to do, though, is to eat some sausage (yeah, I know... salt) after about 6-7 shells. It feels like I'm chewing with rubber teeth.

No chaser other than a mouth rinse here. If it's a milder kava with low dhm levels, then sometimes I can add a little snack on top it, or maybe some hot white tea. With tudei, or specifically a kava high in dhm I might as well just forget about it because the nausea onset is literally instant. I can feel it hit my stomach. Needless to say I have given up any tudei variety due to that fact.

Yeah you're right it really does depend on the variety. I've been drinking fiji waka from KBR lately which is high in DHM content and I can't snack at all. An empty stomach is key on that stuff, unless I wish to feel sick from nausea. Salty light snacks are all I really crave while drinking kava, many times fresh fruit doesn't do it. Now, potato chips, that's where it's at.

Philip, that's funny you mention the 'rubber teeth' feeling, I know exactly what you mean.

haha well, the medical marijuana program is up and running here in Washington lol..... but my doctor doesn't seem to think that "wanting to get stoned" is a good enough reason for a card LOL

Anyway yeah, I don't eat much spicy food anyway but I get what you mean by food being more spicy even with an apparently numb mouth. I notice tastes are more vibrant and complex after drinking kava, the experience is much more enjoyable if you can stomach food afterward. I remember vesuvio cat talking about that in one of his reviews where he ate a banana and was surprised at the sudden complexity of its taste.

We serve a fresh cut pineapple chunk with every shell. Really helps people who find the taste offensive. I know Kanaka Kava on Big Island does the same. I have noticed though that having the pineapple immediately after a chug reduces the numbing effect.

I ate some unripe mango after kava yesterday. It wasn't bad but I didn't want to make myself sick from eating a lot of it.

I actually thought it was ripe.

I only eat unripe mangoes actually... I mean if they ripen at my home I'll still eat them but I prefer the taste of mangoes when they're unripe. They're much more fibrous and crunchy and make for a great snack.
