Chewing fresh or dry kava root is fine, assuming you have good teeth.
Be certain it is washed and that no soil particles are on the root.
I chewed fresh 'awa long before I ever began drinking it.
Always seemed like the effect came about with very little quantity.
Why ever would you add chewing gum?

I enjoy chewing on dried waka root and lawena chunks, but all in small pieces, not ground.I absent mindedly chew for about 10 minutes then spit out the chunks, maybe grab another fresh piece. It's very pleasant though I understand fresh is a lot better.

I suppose adding ground kava to chewing gum might keep it together and keep you from swallowing it. Don't know - give it a whirl and let us know. I admit to wondering if putting it in small pouches like chewing tobacco would work.

If this apparently can be done easily, and with good results, and no really bad effects, then why don't we hear more about vendors who sell the root this way ?
