Daytime drinking.

I generally drink kava nightly, for those of you who don't know I have a stressful job as a Doc and have asperger's, ya it's like that. It's pretty mild, I obsessive, hyper and pretty much a giant kid lol. I also tend to get obssesed with things, like a particular game or watching movies or patients etc.. kava is becoming that. Recently I have begun daytime drinking, and I have to say it has made life that much easier although I have this guilty feeling about using it while working (small amounts), while I find I actually think much clearer being "on" anything makes me concerned. Does anyone here work while have kava? is this something you guys avoid, any detriments I should know about? I have a pretty good grasp of kava and it's pharmacology and it's effects, I guess I'm looking for experienced advice and wondering if I'm venturing into territory of no-no.
On a side note, more anti-cancer news for kava drinkers
Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2012 Aug 3;424(3):488-92. Epub 2012 Jul 3.Inhibition of mitogen activated protein kinases increases the sensitivity of A549 lung cancer cells to the cytotoxicity induced by a kava chalcone analog.Warmka JKSolberg ELZeliadt NASrinivasan BCharlson ATXing CWattenberg EV.SourceDivision of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota, MMC 807, 420 Delaware Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455, USA.AbstractWe are interested in investigating the biological activity of chalcones, a major class of compounds found in the beverage kava, in order to develop potent and selective chemopreventive candidates. Consumption of kava in the South Pacific Islands is inversely correlated with cancer incidence, even among smokers. Accordingly, chalcones have anti-cancer activities in animal and cell culture models. To investigate signaling pathways that affect chalcone action we studied a potent analog, (E)-3-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-1-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (chalcone-24). Chalcone-24 was selected from a series of chalcone analogs that were synthesized based on the structures derived from flavokawain compounds found in kava, and screened in A549 lung cancer cells for induction of cytotoxicity and inhibition of NF-κB, a transcription factor associated with cell survival. Incubation of A549 cells with chalcone-24 resulted in a dose-dependent inhibition of cell viability, inhibition of NF-κB, activation of caspases, and activation of extracellular signal regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK); ERK1/2 and JNK are mitogen activated protein kinases that play central roles in regulating cell fate. Pharmacological inhibitors of ERK1/2 or JNK increased the sensitivity of A549 cells to chalcone-24-induced cytotoxicity, without affecting NF-κB or caspase activity. These results will help refine the synthesis of chalcone analogs to maximize the combination of actions required to prevent and treat cancer.
tis an analog but it is naturally occuring in kava at lower doses. This plant also inhibits colon cancer it seems. I don't think there is a compound on earth that is both effective and non-addictive in anyway, it's quite the find.

In small amounts I don't see an issue. I use kava during class lectures and I find I take more notes and generally get more out of the lecture while I'm on a small dose of kava. I passed the statistics class that I couldn't even grade high enough to get into while using kava steadily. After that I went nearly a month without any kava during summer vacation. No addiction, no problem. *shrugs*

I actually prefer to drink kava in the morning or during the day. Though I never do it if I have to drive or do anything that requires tact, like working. I will usually make batches of 1-2 quarts and usually do all my sessions by 2pm. I find that at night it makes me more sleepy, but when I fall asleep I have to get up every 20 minutes to pee for a few hours and by then I can't sleep. Kava doesn't activate reward systems in the brain so addiction is very unlikely. Like anything it can become habitual and a tolerance will build, but withdrawal symptoms are pretty much unheard of.

Interesting, I would imagine that this is rare, I assumed most drank it at night. I can only tolerate a small amount before work, but it certainly helps with mental clarity thats for sure. I have taken it in the day when just plain bored and found it very enjoyable.
Perhaps it is something I will experiment more with.

I often start the day with kava (it depends on my stress level). A moderate amount has no impact on my job (coding, writing, interacting with customers) and, in fact, allows me to operate by eliminating excessive stress. Of course I stick with more 'head' kava than 'body' so it doesn't put me to sleep.

I'm rarely a daytime drinker but it was interesting to hear how you've incorporated kava into your work life.  I will often drink my brew during my last hour at work (usually between 6 and 7pm).   My job requires a lot of detail - both technical (database/website admin, small scripting projects) and formal writing - and kava is typically terrific for focusing and wrapping up a lot of the loose ends of crap I've been dealing with all day.  In fact, that last hour is often the most productive.
Kava's especially great for mundane, detail-oriented editing and trouble-shooting.

Oddly, though, I've never found it to be terribly creatively inspiring or good for grappling with big ideas or concepts.

I'd like to echo what Dan said at the end there. Kava can be wonderful for myriad purposes, however creativity and inspiration aren't among them.

Aloha guys!

It's lovely to sit by the beach with a wooden tanoa (bowl) fulll of kava in the day time. Usually made a bit weaker and served chilled.

Haven't done that in a while, but it's a favorite of mine!

NDH - Proud to say that the research you posted utilized Paradise Kava's Hawaiian kava (we sent it to Chenggou Xing)

There is an exciting new project coming out of U. Minnesota soon from the same team who are doing research on the effects of solvent use for kava extraction.

Xing and team are one of the first in the country to be awarded $500,000 from the NIH (National Institute of Health) and we are quite lucky that they picked some of our products (we actually fedEX'd the entire line, including fresh kava)

Needless to say, since we are firmly in the solvent FREE part of the industry (a minority, given the plethora of extracts in the market), the results are HIGHLY anticipated!

Great to hear that there is more Kava research going on, I am glad you guys are part of this study with your CO2 extraction method.

Medically, I drink kava for PTSD and as a chemopreventative. I am autistic, and thus prone to meltdowns, but I don't drink kava "for autism." I preseverate on kava, though, because of autism.

Anyway, I do drink a shell or five in the morning before work, and 4-7 shells after work as well. When and if I have a bad call (including any kind of escalation, regardless of how mean or how nice the person is), I'll take some extract. If John Frum didn't want us to use kava at work, he wouldn't have invented CO2.

Apparently two thirds of this forum are autistic, Prince Phillip you must be aspergian though.
