What's new

Does prepping in phased washes achieve any purpose if you're going to consume it all at once?

For a while now I've been traditional prepping by making two 8-12 oz washes, separate water for each wash. If I use twice the amount of water I'd normally use for a single wash, and I knead for twice as long as I would, will there be any difference in Kavalactone content between that and two of the aforementioned kinds of washes? I don't think there would be but I'm not 100 percent sure on this.

Usually when I add water the second time my root has already been squeezed dry, but there's a lot of goodness that rinses off the surface of the spent root and strainer. I think with more liquid and kneading twice as long you would certainly get more out of your root, but a final rinse is vital for rinsing all the kavalactones stuck to the makas and bag. My sessions became very consistent when I began including second washes every time.

I only do a second wash when I've finished my 1.25litres and fancy "just a couple more", but don't want to get too kava'd if intense work schedule the next day. Like Violet I put a lot of effort into the first mix, so the second mix, where I use all the makas with half the original water, is noticeably weaker. It's OK, but not the kind of mix I would like to drink for my first mix by a long way. Watery and thin.
Before kava got so expensive a few years ago I would never bother with a second mix. But of course it depends entirely on what kind of kava experience we are aiming for..

Recently I started doing 2 washes, but with a "twist". I do a traditional first wash/knead/prep, and then when that's done
I use a small-ish amount of water (8-10 oz) and do a fairly short second kneading session.

Then I let that 2nd wash settle for about 10-15 minutes, pour off the top, and keep the bottom 4 oz or so, pouring it into
the original batch. it yields another shell or so of very good potency to the overall batch.

As stated above, there are lots of fine particles in the squeezed-dry first knead that the 2nd one, in fresh water,
releases. No sense wasting them!

I typically do what @nabanga does . Unless I know I Will be asleep and not want kava in the am then I get it out all the first prep so I dont waste.

Fully squeezed kava smells less gross when your cleaning out the strainer bag lol.

That is a good question. For a while I'd simply put some root into a cup, with water and quaf it. Recently for what ever reason if I do that. I feel pretty just...off, gross, bloated and gassy. So now I put same amount of root into a 2cup blender I orginally got to make smoothies. Blend it that way, then strain root. Some places the root I think the farmers or the sellers were seeing how close to dust or particle size they can get. (Looking at you N@H) so filtering is...a challenge. But worth it much...smoother? since some of that root will stay to the strainer I simply re-use it. Works out great. I'm now into putting some into a jar with cold water. Makes great fridge Kava. And is great that way.
