Exercise and / or Kava?

I have always maintained some sort of exercise "program". In my youth it was daylight to dark "play". Is that still a thing? In my teen years it was sports mainly basketball and football. I came of age in the seventies and still have my copy of Jim Fix's book, The Complete Book of Running. Never mind he suffered a fatal heart attack while running! Fast forward to my mid 50's and I no longer enjoy pounding the pavement instead; I walk, hike, backpack and trail run. Currently, I'm “training" for a mid-November physical, so I am trail running at nearby park. I walk up the mountain (900' vert) run the crest and the downhill return trail. It’s a 3-mile loop. Not quite a Spartan race, but a nice sweat and a good dose of Mother Nature. Plus aerobic exercise is a proven cholesterol reducer as well as a proven brain tonic.

Last year was a rough year dealing with an adult bipolar son. I used Kava everyday to cope and sleep. Kava is a wonderful plant. Things are much better now so I’m drinking Kava every third day or so. It’s more recreation than medicine right now.

Is exercise part of your life? If so what kind and how much? Does drinking Kava help or hurt your exercise efforts?

I got on the treadmill the other day for my stress test. I took all it had to give and I almost broke it. Afterwards, the nurse said, "What are you doing later?"
Oh wait a minute, the nurse part must have been a kava induced daydream. :D I grew up just like you ... playing dawn till dusk ...but I never stopped exercising as I got older. Tennis in my 20s, later it was fitness centers, always had weights, then running trails, and now I walk 35 minutes every morning with my wife. Those who try to tag alone don't last long because we walk very, very fast. Hey, it's the best we can do at our age (older than you). Exercise is very, very important. That being said, I'm getting ready to hit the weights starting this week. I do this periodically to make sure I don't lose too much.
No, kava does not hurt my exeicise regiment but it's not that strenuous anyway. I like what you're doing though. Nothing like hitting the trails by yourself and left to the birds and your own thoughts. Very cleansing and relaxing. And then Kava to make sure you sleep well. You're coping very nicely.

I walk 3 miles nearly every day. 3-4 days it's in the woods with plenty of elevation changes. Having a dog is definitely going to make me live longer. I also play disc golf 1-2 days per week and those days are a good 5+ miles of walking. For good cardio I try to do about 2 10 mile bike rides per week. I've been at it for a year and a half after letting myself get overweight and lazy. Which is pretty easy to do in your 40's.

Even a simple 30 minutes of walking per day can have a huge impact on physical and mental health. I've gotten to the point where I physically crave exercise if I take a day off and I've managed to lose over 25lbs in the process.

Kava is having a big effect on my health because I'm not drinking alcohol anymore so that's a big plus. I do enjoy a shell right before my walk with the dog in the evenings. I put on headphones and pretty much disconnect from the world listening to good music but I don't equate kava + exercise as a combo. They both have exclusive health benefits for me though.

@BobChill you're playing my song. However, I used to listen to audiobooks when I ran. Giving up or cutting back on alcohol is huge. It's a lot sugar and that's just for starters. Lately, it has been very tough for me to lose weight though I only need to lose about 7 pounds. If I were still pounding craft beer 4-5 times a week, I'd balloon just like a puffer fish. The guys in this forum are realistic. Are we going to totally give up getting sedated at the end of the day. NOOOOOO. Can we replace alcohol with Kava and get a bunch of physical and mental benefits YESSSSSSS. Hey, let's turn that into a Kava Forums Cheer. But first we need cheerleaders. :sneaky:

Great words, @2Intense ! Sorry to hear about the issues you are dealing with concerning your son. That sounds very challenging.

I do about one hour at the gym every day. 35-40 minutes on the elliptical (3.5 miles and 450-500 calories) and then free weights and some machines for another 20-25 minutes. The impact is extraordinary. I started this routine just about 2 months ago when I stopped drinking alcohol, and my energy has doubled or tripled, and my sleep is much more restful at about 8.5-9 hours per night. Kava is the perfect way to cap the day off.

I've never noticed it to make a difference. I lift 4x/week and run 3x/week.

The only way I could see it being a problem is if you are trying to gain serious mass. Then the empty stomach / appetite suppression game could become very annoying on top of micromanaging your diet.

I need to start exercizing in some way. I always feel good when I do but my work is very active (waitering/doing dishes and running around helping )
So I never feel like it after work. I think it is a form of excersize but not the same. I can tell when I go to school vs go to work my energy levels are way different, and I get lethargic easily after a day of school.
Lol. This thread just reminds me I need to actually excersize.

Here's my stress test story. I was in the holding pen awaiting my turn on the treadmill when the last man up fell back into the room. He was gasping for air and dripping with sweat, he looks over at a lady with him said: "at least you were wrong........the doctor say's I do have a heart!!"

Kava keeps me going.
My exercise routine has been in the pits just lately - a week in England, then back home helping daughter move, babysitting and sorting out my own house, then my fitness studio dropping three of the classes I really enjoyed! But I do walk an hour each day, bike when I can (although piriformis syndrome flared up so had to stop that for a while), and do yoga at home when I'm not too worn out! I drink kava almost every day - no more than 3 shells having learnt my kava-in-excess lesson a while ago. It helps with my anxiety and muscle pain. I turn 60 on Sunday. Almost made it to Halloween but I guess my mom couldn't hold on!

I "work out" at work and drink kava when I get home, my job is very physical so I get it in that way 6-7 days a week.

Have you ever delivered a package that was obviously Kava? You could be our eyes and ears on the ground for the amount of Kava being moved out there!

No ironically no one in the 06831 zip code seems to buy kava, but I only deliver on 4 rural routes, there are 55 routes all together so it's possible. I deliver a lot Amazon packages and pills, lots of pills. Obviously I don't know what kind of pills.

Walk, 10-20ish goblet squats, 100-150 kettlebell swings, 30pushups 30military presses, waiters walk or suitcase carry with 32kg kettbell daily. Take a day off when needed. Once a week I will do a few sets of Turkish getups with said kettlebell. I have worked out on and off through out my life weightlifting, cycling, ect. In and out of shape on a currently in shape routine for the past 9 months. Today I am honestly beat. Kettlebell swings beat my ass unlike any other kind of exercise in drinking heavy kava today for the pain and muscle relaxation.

Kava is a great motivator for me. Not too much kava though. Just enough to get a good vibe going. For example, I'll have about 1.5 tablespoons of something light like Lawena about 3hrs before a bike ride. On Saturday's I like to get up at 8am, and hit the door by 10am. Honestly though, it's about 2.5 hours before I actually hit the road. Kava helps lift my spirits and that motivates!

Hydration is always a concern, as kava tends to be a diuretic. But, I hydrate like crazy while I prep. And after a couple of hours I think I hit a good saturation point which overcomes any of the dehydrating effects of the kava.

What do I do?
Cycling every Saturday (if I can.) I was doing 20 miles of fast (for me) cycling. Approximately 800 calories burned according to Garmin.
But, currently I'm working on distance. I've been doing 40 miles of regular pace cycling. Approximately 1200 calories.

When I can't cycle, I do elliptical. A half hour of HIIT (High impact interval training) followed by a half hour of steady state (approx. heart rate of 145BPM.) About 550 calories. The solid hour keeps me in "cycling" shape.

I lift weights once a week. Not much, just enough to keep from getting bird arms..lol.

And once a week I do about an hour of yoga. Kava kicks butt for yoga!

FYI, in about three months I'll be 50 years old! I don't smoke, which helps. And eat a pescetarian diet. Mostly vegetarian, but with a little fish sometimes.

I have really been enjoying chewing on some root in the morning and mid-day on backpacking trips and long bike tours.
