First time help

I will be trying kava for the first time soon. I ordered  
Hawaiian Grown Kava Powder @ $19.00
Weight: 1/4 Lbs.--4oz.--113grams. from Paradise Kava and their kava candy. I was wondering what should I start of with dosage wise? And is that a decent price? and maybe recommendations of what to get after this. IM just looking for something strong that I can just relax with. any help would be great (smiley: embarassed)

Yup, that's a great price. You pay for what you get, and paradise kava comes at a great price for all the hard work they do to give us great kava from Hawaii. They have yet to disappoint me.



The kava powder comes with dosing instructions, I would say follow those first and see how you react. This forum is also a goldmine for all of our favorite prep methods, just look around. Also, as you may have read, kava has a unique reverse tolerance effect. For most of us, kava will do almost nothing the first few times. Try a candy or two, to maybe get your body used to the kavalactones (the psychoactive lactones in kava). But just don't be too disappointed if you're not "feeling it" the first go around... that's pretty expected...



We have another awesome vendor, Bula Kava House - who sell at an awesome price. They are definitely worth it... I'd recommend the Fu'u personally.. and Kava by Rex... again awesome prices and I'd recommend Fiji Waka from them.. We have sub-sections here for many different vendors so if you're interested in a certain kava, you'll probably find a good review or two here. Just look around.



Really though, for a newbie, you gotta drink it and see what it's all about. And then go from there. It's difficult to really recommend kava because, as this forum has been a testament to, kava can treat us all very differently.

Yup, you picked a good place to start. The Kava Candy is good even without the kava effects. Lucky for us they do have kava in them. Otherwise they'd be like Potato chips....you can't have just one. ha!

I know man, my stock dwindles too fast even the first day I open the package... I need to buy more already. It's not just me either, my girlfriend too, and she swore she'd never drink kava again! lol.

I think the boys said it perfectly! When you are done with the Hawaiian, try the Fijian (don't try ISA, since even I, as the owner of the company does not recommend it. It remains one of our best sellers, and the oldest kava we carry. 6-7 years old. Still you won't find me drinking it unless I'm just checking a batch, or have lost a bet)  I don't prefer the 'heavy sedation' feeling the high volume of double bonded kavalactones ( DHM, DMY and DHK  ) but prefer a lighter more uplifting Kavain based solution for my kava. Everyone has their personal preference as we've learned over the years.

I think you'll like our Hawaiian 'Awa and Fijian Kava since these are the two best powders we carry besides the extracts, which are a different thing altogether and my personal favorite besides fresh frozen 'awa. Try the extracts only after you feel the full effects of  kava in general .

Just get past the taste of kava in general (use pieces of fruit after each cup, it helps) and try enough quantity so your body recognizes the kava (way past the numbing)

You made a great choice by picking an honest and reputable supplier for your first choice. Too many kava n00bs, myself included end up getting bamboozled into getting kona kava their first time and are heinously disapointed and many abandon kava altogether.



Paradise is known for potent and tasty kava, their is an awesome thread on here where they show the process and work that goes into harvesting and preparing a kava plant. Considering the time and effort they put into their product they are selling at a fantastic price.



A good way to go about it would be to order several strains as each one has a different kavalactone lineup. I hear their fijan is delicous and a good price, fijans tend to be high kavain and low DHM varieties and great for n00bs also trying a high DHM would be good and they have an isa as well but that may be something you work up to.



I'd personally recommend that you begin very slowely and take one kava candy or two every day for a week. You will get mouth numbing and mild effects and it may be subtle as your reverse tolerance hasn't been developed. After you've imbided kavalactones once a day for around a week then start in with kava root.



Use tradional prep and start with a tablespoon and be patient. Adil from paradise has a pretty sweet video on youtube and on here where he shows it done properly. It took me about a month of regular kava drinking to get to the point of being able to get fully krunked.

How long would that last me if I started drinking it every night? From what i have read its an alcohol alternative so Ill be drinking this stuff alot if it is good as people say it is.

That varies alot from person to person. I typically drink 1/2 kg plus a month, but generally make 50 (1/2 cup) gram to quart of water/coconut water batches 2-3 times a week and session pretty hard. Some people get good effects of 1 tablespoon where I need at least 1/4 cup. Thats why I recommended starting with tblsp and working up slowely. It's going to take a little while to work past the reverse tolerance to make it an effective alcohol replacement and it will be more expensive untill less does more.



I typically buy 1-2 lb bags of kava just to save money. I also buy alot from bula kava house as they sell kilos at 54$ and I'm a tightwad as well as a kava hardhead. Their having 15% off kava from Vanuatu which is all their kava expect the fu'u. I was a stauch boroguro advocate for a long time due to it's potency and high DHM content and recently have been enjoying the new batch of melo melo which is high kavain and low DHM but nice flavor and great potency with nice euphoria, I actually like it more than the fu'u. Nakamal at home ( N@H) is also great, stone still being the most potent and debilitating kava I've come across.
