Ok folks. As some of you may know I'm new here, and I've been a long time customer of a kava company that has a less than stellar reputation (cough KKF cough). So, after just ONE day of hanging out here I ordered a bag of GHK Papa Kea. You guys definitely a bad influence. (JK) Later that day I ordered a bag of M'oi at the advice of Mr. M'oi himself, Steve Mariotti. (Thanks Steve) It should arrive tomorrow. Anyway. kudos to Chris for getting the Papa Kea to me so QUICKLY. I ordered it on Tuesday May 5, and it came in today, Friday May 8! Holy crap that was fast.
Ok, so that brings me to today - Friday - and this fresh bag of GHK Papa Kea. Ask yourselves this: what would you do if you were in my situation? Well I can only guess the answer, but I can tell you what I'm going to do. I'm drinking some Papa Kea. starting at 6pm. I have already prepared the kava, and about every 15 minutes I'll be taking another drink of the it until either I've had enough, or its all gone. And of course, I'll be here with my new best friends making periodic posts about what I think about it and how it compares to the KKF stuff that I've been drinking. For the record, I prepared the exact same amount of kava using the Papa Kea that I have used in past KKF preparations. I always include some soy lecithin in my kava preparation so it has a little of the required fat needed to bring out the kavalactones. Nothing fancy, just some straight up 'awa on an empty stomach. I've not eaten anything today.
Preparation: filled up a 3" x 2.5" muslin cotton bag with papa kea medium grind, put 2 cups on water in a bowl with a teaspoon of soy lecithin dissolved in it. Placed the kava bag in the bowl and squeezed the bag for 20 minutes. Poured the kava out through a stainless steel strainer into a jar. Put another cup and a half of straight water in the bowl again and squeezed the bag again for another 10 minutes. Poured the kava into the jar through a strainer and thats it. Put the kava jar in the refrigerator for later use.
So, its T-minus 20 minutes and counting, and I have a whole library of metal to play while I'm hanging with you guys. Got a little Loudness on at the moment.
Stay tuned.
Update: 6pm - Drank a half cup of Papa Kea. Initial reaction was how smooth it was. The KKF always tasted harsh. This wasn't. The best way I can describe it is this. Have you ever had a shot of vodka or some other liquor? After drinking it your initial reaction is to gag a bit. I close my eyes and shake my head and reach for something to chase it with. The KKF kava is like that. The Papa Kea isn't. Its smooth. I have yet to chase it with anything.
Update: 6:15pm - drank another half cup of kava. I'm already feeling it from the first half cup, and I'm already wondering if I should finish the entire preparation now. I'm thinking I need to let this settle in before I go too far with it. I have about 60% of my original kava left. I can tell you the effects from the first half cup were more than the effects felt from drinking the entire KKF preparation. This Papa Kea must be considerably stronger than the KKF product. Changed music over to Megadeth. Any Megadeth fans out there?
Update: 6:30pm - drank another half cup - Feeling the effects a little bit more. What I'm feeling is sort of difficult to describe. I'm in a real calm place with my mind still sharp. This is a very heady experience, with a minimal body impact. I'm definitely feeling it, but do not have the "rubber legs" that I've read about from others. This is very relaxing, and is far better than the KKF product. The KKF product makes you sleepy, and that is about it. I still have about a third of my original preparation left.
Update: 6:50 - drank half of what was left - about a third of a cup. This kava tastes pretty good, and I never thought I'd say that about kava. Music sounds really good. I'm thinking Steve Mariotti's advice about drinking a little GHK M'oi before the Nightwish show next week will be perfect. Speaking of Nightwish, I think I'll put on their new album next. Still digging the Megadeth right now. I see what I've been missing. I still have some KKF kava product left, and I'm not sure what I'll do with it now. They advertise it as "noble", but is it? Clearly its garbage, that much is clear whatever they want to call it.
Update: 7pm - polished off my Papa Kea kava preparation. I definitely feel a body impact now. There is no problem walking around or anything like that, but I probably wouldn't want to drive to the store right now either. I'm wondering if the effects will build over time tonight or if this will be pretty much it for a while. Its been a tough week, and this is a great way to finish it off. I'll go downstairs to get a bite to eat in a half hour or so, and I'll make another post here after that. In summary, I'm quite relaxed, I'm thinking clearly, and quite happy. Music sounds great, and so it would definitely be much easier to stay seated in front of my computer than to get up and actually eat some dinner. However I do need to eat something soon. Right?
Update: 8:20pm - just finished dinner - the initial heady effects have mostly gone, and what is left is a very relaxed body hit. I'm thinking I could go to the store now if I needed to, but I just don't feel like moving around that much. My head is still very clear and alert. I've thought about making more, but I'm pretty happy now so why bother? In summary, the big differences between the GHK Papa Kea and the KKF Powdered Root Plus product is taste and degree of effects. The Papa Kea is far milder in taste, and does not engage the gag reflex like the KKF product does. Also, the KKF product is considerably weaker. There is a minimal heady effects with it, and there is a minimal body effect. The one good thing about the KKF product is that it will help you sleep. Its good about that, and the KKF product will make you not want to get out of bed in the morning. Obviously I don't know what effect Papa Kea will have on me tomorrow morning, but it will be Saturday and it won't matter anyway.
Update: The next day. Woke up at 5am feeling great. Hopped on my bicycle and rode 35 miles, and drank some more Papa Kea with my friend after our ride. This was his first time drinking kava, and he liked it. Very good day.
Well that is pretty much it for me. For you gourmet kava veterans this account won't be of any surprise, but perhaps for someone sitting on the fence wondering what this kava stuff is all about, this might provide a little insight. I personally wasn't new to kava, but this is my first experience with good quality kava. It does cost a little more, but its definitely worth it. Thanks Cris. You made my Friday.
