Dr. Axe mentions a place called- Macronesia? I wonder what/Where he means? Kava is from Melanesia and that isn't mentioned as far as I can see.
Thank you for posting this and if anyone has a suggestion of how to comment to Dr. Axe, please advise

"It’s been reported that the use of kava, for as little as one to three months, has resulted in the need for liver transplants and even death. Early symptoms of liver damage include yellowed eyes and skin known as jaundice, fatigue, and dark urine."

Yes, this is quite irritating they keep coming back with these claims. I do want to comment (it may do no good) but I cannot figure out a Contact address. The site itself has "comments" but I do no see a way to add one. If you have time and can figure it out, let me know. I suspect you are far more computer literate than me.

Thank You! Here is what I wrote and submitted, it said --'will be reviewed before posting' but I'll post to you all anyway--
Dear Dr. Axe, regarding your recent story about Kava. First, Kava's origin traces to Melanesia. Later history to Micronesia and Polynesia. I am not aware of "Macronesia". As to the Liver Controversy -- It is important to note that water based kava beverage has been safely consumed by Pacific Islanders for thousands of years. To quote the Journal of the American Medical Association commentary (11-17-2010-Vol 304, No 19)- "Historic use shows that kava is safe under the strict control of the rituals of Pacific cultures. The traditional beverage is consumed on a daily basis without apparent adverse effects, and kava cultivars ... have a long tradition of safe use". Kava beverage is made by mixing water with ground up roots of the plant, then straining.

As long as the liver scare is there. .. we all are the beneficiaries! More kava for us
True, and understood, but I still think it is important to try and sidetrack these liver claims because folks who do research have a harder time getting funding to do things like prove kava beverage prevents certain forms of cancer...not 100 % proven yet but there is pretty good evidence and more research needed. To tell you the truth sometimes I just want to give up and keep drinking the 'awa I grow and let the world pass by!

Yes and no on that point. The problem is that given enough bad press, our fearless government may make it illegal and then no easy/legal kava for us...
Yea. I was half joking. I'd like to see it treated accurately. It's something I've come to truly love and hate the stigma it has.

I just don't understand why people love to pick on medicinal plants and beat that dead liver horse relentlessly. People love to regurgitate bullshit scare tactics I guess. Now if they had a Kava based pharmaceutical, then of course THAT could do no harm.

The thing that makes me sad is that it will dissuade some from it's amazing benefits. I know that these allegations almost turned me away from Kava when I first discovered the root. But, it was this forum and other more accurate portrayals that gave me the confidence to move forward. And I'm glad I did. :)
But, I do agree that it's things like this that will do us no good long term. Alot of folks read his articles.

I know... right. You don't see these articles slamming the 100's of meds sold daily. But, if you watch the tv commercial for them you will hear (very quickly) how those meds can lead to death, demonic.... colonic explosions and blurred vision.

Yes and this is such a popular topic for uninformed journalists, however how exciting can such a topic be when it's been years since any liver harm has actually come into question (from what I've heard) let alone verified. Nothing could be more compelling to readers than outdated misinformation I guess.
