Horrible Stomach Pains

Horrible stomach pains, just spent 30 min in the bathroom and feels like I will need to go back soon.
Has anyone experienced this from kava before? I am guessing its too much fiber from the superfine boroguru grind, this is my first time trying this grind. The Fijian strainer didn't strain any of it so I guess it's close to doing a toss n wash.
I had a ton of it, it never bothered me before when it was the coarse grind. I'm sad, this is my favorite kava. I might have to sell this bag if it keeps causing this problem, it's a 1 lb bag.

Yeah, I feel the exact same way.  I have a couple of large bags of root in my cupboard with that status, though I've already made a few posts about that, and I really don't want to sound like I'm putting down the supplier, because that's not my intention...
I don't know if this is coincidence or not, but out of the new finer grinds, Borogu seems to consistently destroy my stomach as you described.  But yeah, Boroguru is close.  If I'm really in the mood for some of the finer grind stuff, I'll use a muslin strainer bag (or something with a finer mesh).  It takes more time and effort and is a pain knead since it immediately clogs up the bag, but the results on my stomach are, not perfect, but better.
And from what I can tell, it seems like we're in the minority with this.  Toss-n-wash is seeming more and more common, we might just have sensitive stomachs or something.  Of course, I would definitely try another session with your Boroguru.  It could have just been coincidence, something you ate...

I got the same from a micronized batch of kona kava powder. I know kona kava is muck anyway, but I think the fact it was too fine to filter properly was the cause of the stomach cramps. I made 2 brews with it and spent the day running to and from the toilet both times.

I have before. I usually let the fine ground kava sit for a little bit so the some of the fine stuff will float down to the bottom.

I stir it after a while but let it sit some more.

I used to make sure I drank everything and I'd keep string it to mix it in but it irritated my throat/stomach sometimes.

You could try letting it sit for a while in a container then gently pouring off the top liquid.

Boroguru always upsets my stomach, and I strain through a nylon that keeps at least 50% of the weight out of my grog. I'm thinking about doing another filter after to see if it helps any. I don't know if I can get anything to strain finer than a nylon though.

I actually made my own strainer. It seems to let only s small amount through. I had my sis sew it up for me. It is like a kind of spandex material it works very great and is super durable. I got the idea from my wife. She said on her island they use their mumu's(night gown Hawaiian made) and they are really cool looking with nice floral designs. Anyways it is about a similar weave to those spandex book sleeves I think. You should try one of those I think they are only $1-$2 at Walmart.

There's actually an outbreak of Norovirus. Both Queen Elizabeth II and I have had an increase in "kava" symptoms - dermopathy, pants-pooping, fatigue, nausea - but she's the control. She hasn't used any kava at all in well over a month. (She actually doesn't like the taste).

I'm unwilling to blame kava for anything until the weather improves and flu season ends.

Strain your Kava better. The only other time I have experienced upset stomach was when I combined it with either almond milk or coconut milk. I don't know why they seem to give me nausea with Kava, but its really bad.

With Tyler on this one. Never has a single toss and wash or micro grind appealed to me personally. The ancients strained this root's fibers for a good reason. And all of them, across the islands, across many years, unanimously agreed on straining it too!

With Tyler on this one. Never has a single toss and wash or micro grind appeal to me personally. Neither does any form of 'fat catcher' as I like to call lecithin, coconut milk, etc...The ancients strained this root's fibers for a good reason. When I had only a bag of Fu'u from Bula Kava House, I tried the ol' toss n' wash, and it worked well enough in the stomach department, but the Fu'u has such a fine grind. With other Kavas (Boroguru, Melo Melo and a couple Kava by Rex ones - Vanuatu 3 and Tongan Pride), I used the Fijian strainer bag - http://www.kickbackwithkava.com/kava-strainer-bag-fiji.htm - and have been pleased enough with the results that I even use it for the Fu'u.

So far, no major complaints in the stomach department. FWIW, I find that a strong, double-bag cup of ginger tea usually helps the stomach, or a couple drops of pure peppermint essential oil. If you find carbonation soothing to the tummy, you might enjoy a glass of carbonated water (club soda or other sparkly water) over ice with a drop or two of peppermint oil.

The first few times I used Kava, I did the toss n' wash and the chunks of fibrous matter made me gag and upset my stomach like nobody's business.

Good luck!
