What's new

I may have gotten "krunk" today and I'm not sure if I liked it...

Kava Curious
Hello Kava Lounge people,

I've been trying out Kava during the last few weeks - BKH Instant, Fu'u, Melo Melo and Boroguru, as well as KBR Tongan Pride and Vanuatu 3 Limited.

I must say, I've found it mostly enjoyable. My typical dose has been about 2 tablespoons to roughly 2 cups of water, well strained through a Fijian strainer bag. Today, however, I had a fair bit more: roughly 8 tablespoons, mostly of the Boroguru and Melo Melo, with perhaps a heaping teaspoon of the BKH Instant (spread over perhaps 8 or 10 hours).

Now - I am bearing in mind that I'm also fatigued from battling a sore throat and cold symptoms - but this evening, when I was out, I felt...well, I felt rather intoxicated. Difficulty with visually focusing on things, a degree of queasiness, a slight sense of recklessness, light-headed but heavy and weak-limbed and goofy, kind of dizzy, and tired enough to sit down just about anywhere and doze off.

Nobody I talked with gave any indication that I was acting different - but the sensations reminded me a bit of being drunk for the first or second time (unpleasant experiences, both).

So! Was I "krunk"? Or had I merely overdone everything (being sick, taking 2 to 4 times as much Kava as I've been accustomed to and then exercising, going out and running errands, thus temporarily exhausting myself and potentiating the effects of the kava by being in a weakened state)?

Also: what's your comfort zone with Kava? Just a shell or two? Full on krunkenness? Or something in between?

As for the Kavas I've tried, I think BKH Instant is an awesome instant kava - I can even take it straight, under the tongue, and it acts quickly, perfect for acutely stressful situations (like loud and busy places or meetings); the Melo Melo and Boroguru I'm not too sure about as they are, but mixed, they provide a rather chipper, peppy feeling. The Fu'u, though it whacked me out the first time (majorly cerebral and like I was being pulled into some strange gravitational field), I came to quite enjoy - it makes me want to dance. And the KBR stuff - I haven't tried enough to form an opinion.

Whew - anyhow, that's my long, first post. Nice to be here. I expect I'll be taking it easy tomorrow, ha ha.

Cheers

Welcome! Sounds like you got krunk, but you also may have drank a little too much if you felt a little sick. I personally drink around that much every night. For me it's go krunk or go home. Perhaps try using around 6 tablespoons instead and see if you prefer that better.

Welcome to the forums!

There really isn't a solid definition of "krunk" to me... I like to describe it as when you drink just enough kava to reach the plateau of euphoria without getting into sedation/nausea/restlessness/dizziness that accompanies too high of a dose. What you describe sounds to me like you just overdid it, which, well we've all been there. Since you say you for the most part have enjoyed kava at lower doses perhaps you just went a bit over your current personal limit? It's easy to do.

My personal comfort zone is all over the place. Currently it's anywhere from 1 - 2 cups of kava in about eh, 5 cups of water drank over maybe 3 - 4 hours time. Weird ratio I know. But I've been drinking kava for a while, haha, and believe me when I drink it isn't for a state of dizziness or restlessness, it's more for a sense of relaxation and eventual euphoria which, as I finish up the session, turns into the beginning stages of sedation. That's when things start to get nauseous for me but I'll go to sleep before it gets too bad. Seasoned kava drinkers will become accustomed to how different kava's effect them and therefore, they'll be able to better judge how much is enough, when is enough, ect.

My unprofessional advice would be to take it slow, keep drinking enough to "make you want to dance" and get to know kava a bit more before going all out (smiley: smokin)

Best of luck

Welcome to the Lounge!

I tend to have about 1/5 to 3/4 cup of kava with an indeterminate amount of water, and I can't say I've ever felt something as strong as what you're indicating, but I'm a bit hard-headed (maybe I should do like kavalover and try a 2-cup session!). You were probably krunked and then a little bit from the sound of it.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies and the welcomes. Yep, maybe, by your definitions, I got a bit over-krunk. I think I also tried to squeeze in too much activity when I should have been resting and recovering from this cold.

I must say, ever since ordering from some of the vendors more favored on this forum, I've had overwhelmingly (with few exceptions) positive experiences with kava. Some of the first kava I tried was some ground Vanuatu from...what was it..."Kava Canada". Friendly service, but really didn't do much for me. I could barely choke it down and was pretty underwhelmed by it. The BKH Instant is the first one that really made me say, "whoa". (Awesome service, by the way, from both BKH and KBR.)

I'm sort of getting the hang of learning if I more prefer high kavain or DHM strains. Thus far, I think I lean toward kavain, (like Fu'u, if I'm correct), or a mix that doesn't overly favor DHM. But we'll see.

Have a good night, everyone!

welcome,

Yeah, that sounds krunked to me. but also keep in mind krunk on different strains can feel different. If it was boroguru then its high DHM and that can be very sedating.

You were krunk and probably a bit over the line for your personal comfort. Kava is a lot like alcohol in that respect. You have to determine through trial and error what your limits are.

When I first started drinking kava, I was trying to chase a feeling of drunkenness similar to alcohol. I was very disappointed at first. I've come to learn that kava is quite subtle, yet powerful when you become in tune to its effects.

That being said, after having broken through reverse tolerance, I decided one night to go at it hard and see how krunked I could get off of Stone. Over 3 or 4 hours I burned through about 2 cups of ground root total, with about 1/2 cup tossed-n-washed. Bad idea. While I was nicely krunked at first, this changed into feeling very uncomfortable and anxious and ultimately ended up with me emptying the contents of my stomach repeatedly. I considered it mission accomplished because I wanted to get an idea of my limits.

Now with each session, my goal is to achieve relaxation and mild sedation to aid in sleep. Trying to get fucked up off of kava is not my idea of a good time. I have been falling asleep faster and having a much higher quality of sleep than at any point in my life, thanks to this root.

Yeah, I can see now that Kava shouldn't be seen as something by which to get "fucked up". In retrospect (that makes it sound like I've been at this a long time, ha ha), once I got accustomed to the heady effects of Fu'u, for example, 2-3 tablespoons was noticeable and enjoyable, without making me feel totally out of it.

KavaKrunked, 2 cups of ground root sounds like quite a lot. I've only toss and washed Fu'u, because of its fine grind, but I now strain everything.

It could be because of a number of stressors in my life right now that I wasn't careful enough to tune into the subtler (and likely more desirable than full-on) effects. Maybe that's all the more reason to go easier from now on.

Cheers

I am also dealing with a lot of stressors right now and a considerable amount of anxiety. Kava has been a godsend in keeping the anxious thoughts at bay throughout the day after medicating (this is starting to sound like a pro-cannabis legalization post). :)

Live and learn. It's all part of the journey!
