Is it ok to mix propranolol with kava?

So I've got a job interview next week and my biggest hurdle to getting the job will be trying to keep my anxiety under wraps. I'm an anxious person at the best of times, so I was thinking of taking some kava and propranolol to help get through it. Does anyone know if that's an ok mix?

This really the type of question it would be best to run by a doctor or pharmacist. All I know of it is that it is a beta blocker and only recently began being used off label for psychiatric purposes. Kava is difficult to predict in terms of interactions because it is a mixture of various kavalactones which have been shown to be: NDMA antagonistic, C1 cannibinoid receptor agonist, MAO B inhibitor along with allot of speculation about GABA receptor affinity with no proof to back up the claim. The only substance that has been unhealthy to combine it with is alcohol. I'm not sure what to speculate about it's interaction with a beta blocker. I looked at the page on wikipedia and really the main interactions were with stimulant and anesthetic compounds in addition to phenobarbital. Seeing that kava has effects at inhibits the reuptake of noradrenalin and propranolol inhibits the transporter of norepinephrine(adrenalin), I can only speculate that since they both inhibit adrenalin at separate places what they may mean overall. That's why I'd have doctor or pharmacist look into it and give you a definitive answer.

I agree...it's best not to combine the two on interview day as the outcome could be worse than some anxiety. I'd probably do one or the other just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the replies guys. The interview is Monday so I won't get a chance to ask a doc, unfortunately. I asked a pharmacist but she didn't even know what kava was! Not too surprised by that actually since kava is almost completely unheard of here.

I agree that it's probably a good idea to give it a trial run later today maybe!

should be no issue at all. Propranolol at dosages of 10-40mgs for performance anxiety purposes should pose not issue when mixed with kava.

It's really nice having a doctor on the forum who actually knows about kava. Most of them have no idea what a kavalactone is!

Thanks NDG, that's good to know :) I agree with Krunkedout, when I mentioned kava to my pharmacist I was met with a confused, blank stare. It's great to have someone on the forum who is so knowledgeable with this stuff.

It went pretty okay I think, thanks for asking, Dubkava :) I hadn't read NDG's post so I just played it safe and had a bunch of kava candies instead. They did help!

Glad to hear midas! Cheers.

I've been curious myself about beta blockers for social anxiety, specifically for public speaking. The fear of public speaking is what brought me to kava in the first place, and now I am so glad to have found it. Not only has it proven to be a trustworthy friend in public speaking situations, but also a friend in the off hours, which is so nice to have. +1 kava

That's good to hear!! Kava is a godsend for situations like that!! I've still yet to try the kava candies though.
