Kava and paranoia

kl.Romore

Kava Curious
I have been using Kava as a alcohol substitute to relieve anxiety and to help me relax. I'm not an alcoholic but I used to use alcohol in small doses to relieve anxeity, now drinking even small doses makes me feel horrid so Kava for me has been a god send and I thoroughly enjoy its effects.

Although Kava relieves my anxeity there is just a slight hint of paranoia while using it and then the day after; my speech also feels less fluent.

To say that Kava relieves anxeity but also makes me slightly paranoid is odd and its hard to explain.

Does anyone else experience anything like this that can shed some light on my experiences?

Not at all. I remember getting hella paranoid when I used to toke (that was mostly fear o getting caught) but kava relieves my anxiety 100% and makes me feel peaceful and normal. What strain are you using?

Maybe it comes from self-consciousness of being under the influence of something?

Or is it the someones-out-to-get-me kind of paranoia?

I have used several different types. Paranoia is a strong word and its a hard thing to explain. It is in no way the same paranoia experienced from cannabis.

I feel peace full and at ease but its almost like catching sight of things in the corner of your eye - like being more aware of what is visible at the furthest corners of vision.

Its strange and probably does not make much sense.

The self consciousness of being under the influence is exactly how it feels.

Nothing like out to get me paranoia.

This is a post I wish I had kept to my self as I realise how odd it sounds.

I guess I am just trying to air my mind ;)

I've never gotten paranoid from kava, but I can say I've gotten grumpy with my wife. If she's jabbering on while I'm krunked it can be a little hard to enjoy.

Well I can tell u that I have a strange issue with feeling anxious and tense with certain types of kava, in fact I don't get a whole lot of anxiety relief from most kavas, I've been trying to figure this out, and it seems that vanuatu type kavas lean me towards that, which makes no since to me. but not allways, I just can't figure it out, as stone can make me feel really anxious but wow doesnt, Tongans never do, but most Vanuatu kavas seem to have something in them that can sometimes make me feel a bit crazy, the worst ever was a large dose of 84% paste a while ago, litterally gave me like a 2 hr long borderline panic attack, so I am extremely sensitive to the strange cerebral tweaking that some root types can do, but some types are perfectly balanced, nambawan seems to warp my mind a bit while making me feel content. Which i like a bit of mind warping as long as theres no anxiety, dont know if any of that sounds related, i think it comes down to a certain lactone, and i get less anxiety the better strained the grog is strangely. So Hope this helps.

Romore, let's define our terms here.

When most people discuss paranoia, they're talking about paranoid delusions. E.g., a person who thinks the government is tapping their mobile is this sort of paranoid.

What I tend to exhibit is somewhat different, paranoid personality disorder. While this does tend to color my observations, my conclusions are grounded in evidence and reality. E.g., the government has been bribed by telecommunications companies and that's why unlocking one's cellphone is an offense punishable by five years in prison. Or, better yet... people don't actually like me very much.

Kava does tend to bring out the later. Also, the neuroaccelerant properties of kava tend to allow me to come up with alternative hypotheses, which means that I tend to view every bombing or shooting through the lens of false flag, or at least to never allow myself to just feel the mute horror without asking "qui bono?". Someone always gains, and it is usually those who wish to consolidate their power at the expense of your freedom.

Both of the above two paragraphs are an inversion of what is sometimes called Hanlon's Razor, "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Perhaps it is that kava lights my brain up so much that I simply cannot accept stupidity as a valid answer.

Sorry if I sound paranoid.

Just had 1 kg of boroguru delivered and it was not cheap. Very disappointed to find that it makes me feel quite anxious rather than relaxed.

Using 3 tbs to about 700mls of water. Would lowering the dose help?

Any advice on how I can get my investment to give me the effects that i'm after?

Adjusting the dose might help.  I'm not sure if more would be helpful, or less.  What might help is a visit to the Kava Lounge Chat.  We won't provide group therapy, but we might be able to help uncover the flavor of anxiety you have, so we can recommend the best kava from our personal experiences.

In my own experience with paradoxical kava reactions, the cure is almost always more.  If I feel pissed or anxious or whatever, and I need to snap out of it quick, I just down shell after shell until whatever it is that is upsetting me goes away.

The one thing I must recommend with this is water.  One time, a nice woman who I love and respect insisted that in order to relieve herself of Untold Story Anxiety, she needed to tell me the plot of the movie Mystic River.  I kept just eating Fire Island.  Big mistake.  (Always keep some kava kava candy or CO^2 extract in case you need it).

I'm a kava Noob, in fact this would be my first post... I've been loitering around the Kava Lounge for some time but I have experienced this type of paranoia while experimenting with other herbals in my search for anxiety relief. It's called paranoid psychosis. I know that phrase sounds scary and I'm not saying you've gone psychotic but that feeling of catching something form the corner of your eye, fear of walking past a dark room, or going onto the balcony at night... it's a sign of mild onset of psychosis. I got that with K@ sometimes and when I was younger, and more experimental with drugs. It was enough to make me not to further experiment with that particular herb. Keeping that experience in mind I avoided the heavier kavas or ones that seem to stimulate, I read a lot on this forum and Boroguru seems to be a heavier type of Kava, under the Bula Kava House forum, one poster reported having scary dreams on this particular formulation so I stayed away. I'm thinking lighter, more uplifting kavas would be better. I'm eagerly awaiting my first shipment from Paradise Kava, 1/2lbs Fijian, 1/2lbs Hawaiian, a CO2 extract, and some kava candy. I want to try it all! I'm lucky I found Kavasseur and this blog before making my first purchase.

Hello Chewie,

Psychosis is where a person loses touch with reality and cant distinguish between what they perceive and what is real, it is usually accompanied by hallucinations; auditory, visual etc. Drug induced psychosis usually happens if a person is already susceptible to psychosis and the drugs set it off. Drugs such as cocaine and amphetamines and there withdrawal or comedown can induce drug psychosis in a mentally healthy person, usually a short term condition lasting a few days.

I have been experimenting today with relatively low doses, 1 tbs to 600mls-ish of water. I had my first at 12 pm after a small meal and it had a very relaxing effect. I had several other drinks throughout the day on an empty stomach and felt the uncomfortable anxiety lurking. I have just had a largish meal with a small glass of wine followed by 1 tbs and 600mls of water. I was feeling irritable and slightly anxious before the meal but now I feel quite relaxed and mellow: the effects that are desired.

So my conclusion so far is that I get a better effect from drinking Kava having had eaten.

I will keep experimenting and hope that I can get on top of these undesirable effects.

Does anyone else drink Kava after food rather on an empty stomach?

If any in the UK wants to trade 0.5 kg of Boroguru for an equal quantity or some instant of a roughly equal value, I would like to swap to try a different type?

Hi Ramore. I don't have much to swap at the moment (only a couple of packs of kava candies), but if you're looking to sell your .5kg I'd be interested.

Hi Midas,

I would be happy to sell for a reasonable price and the candy if you can spare that.

I have a whole unopened 0.5 kg and also an open bag with maybe 10 to 15 tbs gone.

Does the kava candy contain any sugar?

just checked the candies ingredients and I think I will pass.

I would like to try an all natural root extract although this may still give me the same anxiety issues!!!

Hi Romore. The Candy does contain some sugar I believe, sorbitol I think? I'll send you a PM about your root. If you're looking for something sugar free for anxiety I'd recommend Paradise Kava extract, it's really good. Just make sure your over your reverse tolerance before you buy it, because there are cheaper way of getting past RT than using the extract :)
