kava + antibiotics

Didn't know you couldn't mix them. Hmmmm. When I was in the Solomon Islands and when I'm in Ghana I take doxycycline as a malaria prophylaxis and always drink Kava.

I took doxy for two and a half years when I served in Peace Corps. The medical folks never warned me about my liver being taxed... :O

I hear your not supposed to drink alcohol when taking anti biotics is this because of liver stress? Hm. I would ask a doctor 1st to be safe, there are different anti biotics and maybe some are worse for your liver?
I'm interested in learning more about this topic. I've been on antibiotics for the last 2 weeks and assumed the same as most others - that since you're advised not to drink alcohol while on abx, kava would fall under the same category. But maybe I'm completely wrong about this. I've got some of the highly rated extracts from Paradise Kava as well as a fresh order from KbR so the temptation is killing me. Still, I'd hate to have something bad happen and provide fodder for the anti-kava folks out there. U of Maryland Medical Ctr doesn't list any contraindications with antibiotics but does advise that it should be avoided if one is on medications that tax the liver. I'm probably going to continue to wait it out, but advice from others who have taken moderate doses of kava while on antibiotics would be helpful since it seems to be a gray area.

I was on antibiotics a few weeks ago due to the flu, never stopped drinking kava nor did i feel any adverse reactions. I would like to know more on how it affects the body though.
