Kava Concoctions

Slow Native

All the way!!
Reading When John Frum Came - A Novel of South Pacific Cargo Cults and the Shaman of a native people whipped up a concoction of Kava and Palm wine that incapacitated many of the young men that were consuming in during ceremony.
Has anyone heard elsewhere such a combination?
Very interesting novel by the way, and this is coming from someone who's not a large "reader"!

Mixing kava with alcohol is generally a pretty bad idea. I imagine it is more intoxicating than the two are seperately an together would have a powerfull effect, but it would be really bad for the liver. I'm pretty sure that most of the liver toxicity reports that gave kava a bad name where from people who used kava in combination with alcohol or from alcohol based extracts. Alcohol inhibits the liver from hydrolizing kava properly and can overtax it and cause damage when the two are mixed. I've considered mixing before and thought that using good strong coconut water kava would make a killer pina colada, but never have due to the risks. I imagine it was quite common in history before the dangers became known.
