Kava does NOT help me sleep?

The general consensus around here is that kava helps people sleep. I'm just wondering if anyone else finds they don't sleep as well when taking kava?

Even when I tried more sedating strains (Boroguru, Mahakea) I found my sleep was interrupted. I've never been a great sleeper, and usually take medication before bed. I've been on the medication for so long that I can't really sleep without it. But on nights where I drink kava, I don't want to mix it with psych meds, so depending on how affected by the kava I am, I will go to sleep without it, but then wake up a couple of hours later and be wide awake.

For example, I drank too much kava last night and was feeling sick, so I didn't risk taking sedating medication on top of that. I probably went to bed around midnight, and was wide awake at 3 AM. I took my usual dose of medication then, and slept for a few more hours.

It reminds me of the interrupted sleep I got when I was drinking alcohol heavily. I found alcohol to be a huge depressant. That's one of the reasons why I stopped drinking it, and I'm prone to depression, but today I'm kind of feeling the same sort of depressant effect, which worries me. I'm guessing it's lack of sleep. I'm just feeling generally dissatisfied and angst-ridden. Things in my life are going well, I have no reason to feel dissatisfied, but there's a big theatre festival in town right now and all I can think of is how I'm not a part of it (which must mean I suck) but in reality I just landed a job as a music director and am in charge of writing music for a show at my university, which is pretty big, not to mention PAID while the current theatre festival is volunteer.

I know the sour mood must be from lack of sleep, but it's disconcertingly close to how alcohol felt for me, minus the other hangover symptoms. Maybe I just shouldn't go so hard on the kava, and maybe stop a few hours before bedtime so I can take my usual medication.

Does anyone else find that kava DOESN'T help them sleep? I think I'm going to take a night off and try to get some decent sleep tonight.

When your on other medications it's hard to judge,... I had this issue for a while with kava when I stopped taking K@.. which is a sleep aide so when quitting it causes severe insomnia... when I drank kava during this it helped at first but then made it much much much much much worse.. I believe you just can't sleep without your meds, not because of kava itself... and the kava is exacerbating it like I did for me.... how is your sleep without kava or sleep meds??

You're right, it's probably the lack of meds completely that is causing the sleep disturbance. Usually without kava or sleep meds I can't sleep at all.

Ideally I'd like to go off of medication, but that's not really an option right now, I'm taking them for more than just sleep. I'm just careful not to mix them with kava.

Yeah its tough to gauge something so reactive like kava while going through that... in the late stages of K@ wd I couldn't even take kava cause I got overstimulated... now I love moi and still get sedated from all kinds alike ... which is how it should be ... I don't know if youve tried mj for this? But honestly cannabis is a very good sleep aide. If you make a tincture it provides, no paranoia and potent sleep and anti anxiety effects

Okay yeah I see you've mentioned it gives you bad anxiety... (me too ) but not smoking it can provide alot better results, when trying not to get high. Also if your Ina state with cbd tinctures for cheap those work apparently very well. I even chew it and get appetite and sleep relief without any psycho active effects.

I mentioned these in another thread. I have been using them for the past four days and fall asleep in like 5 minutes. Normally it would take me 3-4 hours to doze off. I put them on at 8pm and go to bed at 10pm. If you are on your phone or tablet late at night, its worth the $10 to give it a shot.

Are you serious? I would like to give them a shot, but I think it seems unrealistic that these glasses could make one sleep better?

They seem to work for me. If you check the reviews on Amazon most of the people seems to be using them for sleep and leaving positive feedback. Considering they are only $10 the risk is pretty minimal. If they don't work you have an extra set of safety glasses ;)

There is actually some research that supports the blue light to insomnia correlation. Here is a link to an article on pub med. if you do a bit of googling you will find more.

Man i'm on computers all day then sometimes at night watching TV, video games, recording music on my computer. phones. screens everywhere. for $10 i'm down to try those glasses out.

As for kava, yeh some strains will affect my ability to sleep. Had Kavaboy's Mellow kava last night and had a little trouble going to sleep but I'm pretty sure I can blame that mostly on the half Dr. Pepper half Code Red fountain drink while driving a few hours home yesterday afternoon. The kava did chill me out enough to have some really good headphone time last night while laying in bed not sleeping.

In addition to those stylish glasses, there's a free program called f.lux that makes your computer screen gradually "warm up" in the evening. During the day it's normal but once the sun sets, it slowly begins turning yellowish-orange (a.k.a., emits less blue light). Same exact principle. :D

But if you use this program, you will have to jail break your iOS device.
