Kava Doesn't Help Me Sleep

Kojo Douglas

If anything, it gives me a second (or third, for that matter) wind. Today I was blessed with the rare occurrence of having nothing to do. I decided that finishing one book and starting another would comprise a good last-minute goal. So I ate a light lunch and around 4:00 brewed up two cups of Chief's Jungle. I was high as a kite for about three hours and loving life. I started to come down a bit and mixed up a big glass of Fire Island with two tablespoons. That was around 7:00 or 8:00 (can't remember) and again, I felt great. Now it is around 10:36 and I feel absolutely fantastic, yet horribly energetic. I have just taken another book down from the shelf and have no desire to turn in.

Does anyone else have this experience with Kava? It is championed as a good sleep aid, but I have just never felt that way.

hmmmm, thats pretty strange. When I start coming down off the kava, I get reallllllly hungry, then I eat and cant stay awake. The only kava to really give me energy is Soloman and even after I come off of that I pass out. In the end kava always leads me to a deep restful sleep, but I just like staying up late.

I really need to decaffeinate for 2011. It tends to compete with caffeine for something... maybe norepinephrine receptors?

On the other hand, kava plus doxylamine succinate is the bomb.

The only one that really does this to me is Solomon. I also feel kinda dry if I drink enough of it.

Pretty much all the other ones help with sleep if I choose to lay down.

My only theory is that there's reasons why people don't sleep. I have the duties and responsibilities of protecting Kastom and being married to QE2. Kava helps me relax. On the other hand, yeah, fuck yeah, kava wakes me the hell up and gets me positively jumpy. The euphoria kava causes is not always a calm euphoria.

I put Solomon on my do not buy list because one time I couldn't force myself to sleep until finally the kava wore off at about 5:00 AM, and then I had to wake up at 8:00 to be at some Royal function. Cutting the ribbon at the grand opening of a shopping mall or burning more vintage Doctor Who for the BBC... something like that. I had to take the rest of the day off at around noon. Since I'm in my 80's, the media blaimed it on the ill health that comes with old age, rather than being a total krunkosaurus wrecked.

I take a 3 mg tablet of melatonin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melatonin)7 hours and 40 minutes from the time I want to wake up if I'm not sleepy.  Melatonin is very healthy, but it makes me REALLY thirsty the next day and can make me groggy.  I find if I am naturally tired, kava cooperates; but if I am upset, kava unfortunately cooperates and my mind races (I drink Solomon, btw).

Yes, I am also a user of melatonin. Great sleep aid, also its just a natural occuring hormone in your body. It wont really make you sleepy, but when you close your eyes, you will sleep.

Wow.  I just slept 30 minutes past my desired wake up.  Alarm clock doesn't appear to have gone off? Weird.
I am still trying to get the melatonin application correct.  Going to try and take 3 mg of melatonin 8 hours and ten minutes before my desired wake up time and see if that works...

Melatonin makes me feel too tired the next day. I do use it, but prefer 100mg-200mg of 5htp an hour before sleeping on non-kava nights. I cycle with other sleep combos.

Here's a tip for those who like to have epic dreams. For me, if I take any sleep combo, I don't remember my dreams. So for epic dreaming, don't take a sleep aide but take 100mg of b6 right before sleeping. I swear I have dream(s) that feel like they last hours and are very linear not mumbo jumbo.

Also, drinking a cup or two of apple juice does the same, add the b6 and wow.

Solomon keeps me up, others make me tired to various degrees, then again I haven't tried kava in the late afternoon.

Sometimes I even take melatonin after a kava sesh before bed. It makes the dreams even more vivid. I took a nap earlier and dreamed I was at a south pacific kava bar just chilling and talking. Then I walked out and I was in the U.S. and the cops thought I was on drugs. I told them I had some kava and they said "I LOVE KAVA" and we just talked for the rest of the dream. Hahaha.

And yes melatonin makes me kind of drowsy in the morning. I once slept 13 hours from melatonin. ICKKKKK.

my experience equals your own. I think it is a matter of state of mind. If you drink it and lay down to relax, I find that sleep comes easy. It doesnt make me tired in a way that makes me want to sleep on its own. quite the opposite and thus I am more inclined to read, be creative or play an online shooter while enjoying my buzz.

Put on some soothing music (I often go for the Future Sound Of London), lay down and do some basic relaxation techniques and youll be gone in mere minutes.
