A lot of people new to kava wonder not only how to prepare the kava and there are many different ways to do that but they also wonder about the dose.

How much kava should I use to get a high dose or a medium dose or even a low dose, so with that I will tell you how much I use and how much some of my friends use. This will give you an idea of where to start so you can find your perfect dose, and it is important to learn your own dose.

I use about 2 tablespoons per cup of water and I drink 2 cups, this is for the medium grind that you have to strain. If I use an micronized or an instant then I would use about 2 teaspoons per cup of water and I drink 2 cups. My friends use up to 6-8 tablespoons per cup and they would drink 2-4 cups with the medium grind. With the instant they would use 2-4 tablespoons per cup of water and they would drink 2-4 cups.

This is only a basic guide, there are people that like there kava stronger and use more, it could be either that they are using weak kava.

For me I know what a good strong kava is and I know how much to add to get that good effect so if I am using my normal amount of kava and I do not get the effect I normally get then I know it is a weak kava, at least weaker than what I have had and am used to. With a good strong kava you will use less.

When you find your strong dose then cut that in half and it should be a med dose and then cut the med dose in half and you have a low dose.It is important that you learn to use kava, like drinking it on an empty stomach and knowing your ideal dose, things like this will help you to have the best kava experience every time. I hope this information is useful, aloha.

Hi Chris,
So would you suggest a beginner using your micronized Kava to start off with just two teaspoons per cup of Kava and move on from there for the desired effect, meaning have another cup made up of two teaspoons every 15 mins or so?

And: What sort of effect do you yourself get from two cups of two teaspoons per cup of your micronized Kava?

Thanks
Yvonne.

Whoops, HeadHodge I thought your post was addressed to me, but the sentiment remains.
No Worries Yvonne... Chris is on Hawaiian Time, so he should be lurking around somewhere to answer your question. If not today, for sure tomorrow.

Hang in there!!

Hi Yvonne, I would say that trying my micronized will be easier for you to get to know kava, all you do is stir in into some water or juice and enjoy. This will enable you to find out how much kava you will need in order to get the effects you want.
I would actually try 1-2 tablespoons per cup and only drink 1/2-1cup every 15 min so you can see when the kava starts to affect you, then you can adjust the dose and go with less to see where you like it.
The effects I get are very much to the head at first because the Hawaiian kava is high in Kavain, then after about 45 min or so I will start to feel the body effect of the DHK and DHM and if you keep drinking you will start to feel like you could go to sleep and then you sleep really well.
Each person is different with the effects they feel but you can bet that you will get the heady effect because of the high kavain content.
You will also notice that you feel good, problems seem like they are not problems and you feel at peace, calm.
In Hawaii the chiefs would drink kava before they have talks with a enemy clan, they would do this before going to battle and they did this because with kava you do not feel aggression, you feel happy and at peace. Let me know if you have any other questions. Aloha.

Oh and Chris, I do have another question or two;
How many Kavalactones in a tablespoon of your Micronized?
And:
What type are they, meaning more aimed at pain, stress, relaxation etc etc etc, if you know what I mean?
Kindest regards
Yvonne.

Hi Yvonne,
With any kava, if you have 1 tablespoon and the kava is 12% total kavalactones, then 12% of the kava in that tablespoon is kavalactones. If you get a kava that is 6% kavalactones, then only 6% of that tablespoon is kavalactones.

Each kava is different and some are a bit the same in the effects, the best thing to do is to try them so see how it affects you, you can also get an idea of the effects by reading the reviews for my kava.

I have found with the Hawaiian that if I want it to be more to the body then I just drink a bit more because the Hawaiian kava is highest in Kavain and not so much in the DHK or DHM so you need to drink more to get the effect of these kavalactones from the Hawaiian kava.
Let me know if you have any other questions, aloha.

Hey Yvonne! It's sounds like you're new to kava. Welcome, it's a beautiful place. I always tell people at the Bula Kava House kava bar that you know kava is seriously special on so many levels due to the fact that so many people have been drinking it daily for over 3,000 years, despite the fact that it honestly tastes kind of like a mud puddle.

As far as dosing goes, some people do just a tablespoon or two, like Chris says, some people do much more. I know people that buy our kava and will use a single tablespoon for two servings and will be taken to a wonderful place. There are others who will use a ratio of 1 part kava to 2 parts water, volume wise. This seems a little over the top to me and would knock me on my ass personally. For a beginner, I suggest 1 part kava to 4-5 parts water, and two 6-8 oz. servings spaced about 15-20 minutes apart. So start with a half cup of kava root and two cups of water. Spacing it into two servings allows time to gauge if you need the second for the desired effect. If the first serving did the trick, save the other for the next day.

There are many different kavas with different kavalactone profiles. Some are stronger than others, some are felt more mentally, others more physically. I know there are some other great vendors listed on this site that have kavas that run the gamut and you'll have a very good time trying them to find out what you like. If you have any specific questions about the kava Bula Kava House sells, or kava in general for that matter, please feel free to send me a message anytime.
