Kava on an empty stomach

Hi guys,

Looking forward to my pay day at the end of the month so I can order my first ever batch of Kava - I'm gonna go for the Boroguru (spelling?) strain as from what I've read it provides great muscle relaxation, and the muscle relaxant properties of Kava are what interest me the most.

One question though, I've seen a lot of people mention that you need to drink it on an empty stomach - ideally 4 - 5 hours after a meal? Just curious as to whether this is true or not, because I love my food and don't like the idea of not being able to eat for ages until I can have my Kava haha.

Also when you're 'krunked' do you still have a good appetite? I always love a late night meal and I'll probably only be drinking it in the evenings.

This probably makes me sound like a fatty but oh well :D

Cheers

You know, its funny that this thread popped up today.

I woke up at 6 am today, with only a spoonful of jelly and peanut butter for breakfast. I came home at 6:30pm without eating anything all day and immediately drank a 4 tbsp/2 cup ratio whilst kneading and using soy lecithin, and honestly I feel like I could have not eaten for 2 hours and the results would of been the same.

YMMV, though. As you said a lot of people swear by it here.
Oh and IMO, I do think it curbs appetite.  I tried to drink kava whilst eating spaghetti.  Needless to say I didn't eat very much spaghetti, even after I was done drinking.

Without a doubt it curbs my appetite. I often don't eat breakfast or lunch, then have a large dinner. If I have a kava session before dinner then I really have to make sure I eat because I could pretty much go to bed without having eaten a thing all day.

I don't necessarily think you need to drink on an empty stomach though, I think that one is still debatable. I have a pretty strong stomach so I don't really suffer from nausea either way, and by far the highest effect of kava (certain kinds) for me is when I throw some food in on top. That's when I may feel a little dizzy it gets so strong, but it's very short-lived. As long as you aren't stuffing your belly to the brim before a session I think the kava is still going to work for you.

Many times though, I just don't want the food, so I wait until the effects are mostly worn off before eating.

In my opinion, you won't go far if you have eaten before a sesh. As a rule (most of the time) I make sure I have at least three hours where I havnt eaten. And I actually get the munchies after a good sesh. And I agree with Ed that throwing a little food in after boosts the krunk. But I don't find it works the other way around, like I'd I eat then drink. But if I drink then eat, then whoa.

The only times I've had massive euphoric headrushes off kava have been after a meal (like 2 hours or so after). Kava does kill the appetite, that much is true.

Thanks for the replies people. I guess it will be a case of trial and error.

Will report back with how things work out for me in regards to the borogoru strain!

Cheers, take it easy people :)
