Kava + Passion Flower tea, anyone try it?

Passion Flower is supposed to be a mild MAOI and have synergistic properties with kava, acting as a catalyst.

I have 1lb of dried passiflora incarnata. 1 tbsp by itself as an herbal tea doesn't have much effect on me. I actually find chamomile + lavender to be more relaxing.

Nope, can't say I've tried that. I personally choose to leave my kava alone. Coconut juice...ok. Sugar Palm juice...yes please! Other than that I don't really add anything to it.

MAOI stands for MonoAmine Oxidase Inhibitor, in other words it inhibits your body's ability to oxidize amine compounds, for example Ayahuasca contains DMT, which ordinarily would be very quickly metabolized by the body, plus an MAOI to allow it to enter the body in a much higher concentration than would occur normally. Kavalactones do not contain any amines at all, they are purely carbon compounds with a little bit of oxygen and that's it. Possibly, MAOI could have an indirect effect, for example the kavalactones cause an increase in endogenous amines like adenosine or serotonin and the MAOI amplifies that affect by slowing down the metabolism of the excess amines, but the mechanism of how kavalactones have their effect is not that well understood as yet.
