I would like to start by introducing myself to the forum as I am a new user. Glad to have found this community by way of the Kavasuer blog which I ran across last week.
A little background: I've been using Kava occasionally over the past 10 years in the form of tea (Yogi brand) as well as liquid extract pills from various reputable suppliers. I've enjoyed this plant substance in those forms but have always seen it as a very mild actor overall. i'm experienced with many other substances of greater physiological/psychic impact but for many years have been relatively 'clean' with the exception of moderate alcohol usage and the occasional cigar.
Recent Kava usage: Today I received in the mail a 125g container of Fire Island instant kava from N@H.
Dosage: I've currently taken 4 'shells' of kava today. Each dosage consisted of 2 teaspoons of powder to 4 ounces of room-temp water with the exception of the first dosage which I mixed with lychee-mint lemonade. The fruit juice combo was incredibly disgusting whereas the subsequent water-only liquid bases were much more palatable. The timing of these dosages were as follows:
3:30
4:15
4:45
5:10
I took these shells having not eaten roughly 3 hours prior to the first shell. I have been taking kava somewhat regularly over the past week in preparation for receiving the instant powder.
Initial impressions: The first cup and some had very little effect on me. The third had noticeable physical and sensory effects but nothing approaching what I imagine getting 'krunked' would feel like, as described by others on this forum. From the first shell I've felt mild nausea. The 4th serving put me over the edge i this respect although I've been able to refrain from vomiting. I mixed a 5th shell but have opted instead for a warm mug of chamomile tea in attempts to settle my stomach. The idea of drinking more than the 8 teaspoons I've consumed thus far is beyond repulsive.
Set and setting: I took my first shell at work before heading home. The next three shells were consumed at home before heading out to purchase the dog some treats. I live in an urban area so the environment was not ideal but I managed to find some appropriate tuneage to plug into for my sojourns which made everything else more palatable. I'm experiencing more of an impact on my body than on my mind - particularly an advanced state of delayed vision and blur when moving my eyes. It is difficult to rank is experience as either positive or negative due to the extreme nausea which I am hoping will pass once I eat something in a bit. It should be noted that I attribute the nausea, in part, to the nasty juice ocmbo with which I started off this session. This could also be due in part to my newness to ingesting kava at such large quantities. My hope is that the 'reverse tolerance' principle will kick in over the next few days, allowing me to access the more profound, enjoyable and healthful attributes of this substance without the unfortunate side-effect.
The cost of these 4 cups is roughly $24 and not worth it given the nausea. In all likely hood I wouldn't consider it worth it even without the nausea. Luckily I have 4 pounds of powdered dried root on it's way which may provide a more cost effective, and hopefully less nauseating experience.
