Nobody I have talked to even knows what kava is.
Just wondering what everybody thought about this....

Why isn't kava a mainstream recreational activity?

A) Taste
B) Price

Kava Curious
Hi JoeyTheGreat,

I would like to know the answer, too. I am new to kava, so I can't really comment, but I can say that I started using the kava pills that you find in health food stores (which, by the way, are very weak). I don't mind the price. I think the perparation is kind of fun. So far, I have only ordered from Nakamal@Home and I have been very happy. I do know this, kava got a bad name a while back when it gained popularity overseas. There were reports of some people dying of liver failure. A lot of these countries banned kava. As it turned out, the supply could not keep up with the demand, and careless distributors were buying and selling a part of the kava plant that is normally thrown away. A few countries lifted their ban, but kava's popularity wained. Anyway, I think that if kava went mainstream, it would be classified as a controlled substance, it would be banned, and the price would go through the roof on the black market.

I think its good its not mainstream. I think alot of people would use kava for the wrong reasons and something would happen because of it. Thats just my opinion tho.

Yeah, I'm not in a rush to tell the world about kava.

The only times I talk about it is if I know someone that might benefit from it. If I do, I explain what kava is in detail to make sure they don't get bad info.

I've done 1 college paper and will be giving a presentation in my bio-psychology class only because it's relevant to what we're learning. It's a good place to plant the seeds of an educated understand about kava.

there are two main reason:

1. the German study claiming kava could damage your liver

2. the taste. kava tastes terrible.

That said, I'm not in any hurry to see kava go mainstream because then it would be even more of an enemy of the Pharmaceutical companies than it already is. They don't want people using an inexpensive plant to reduce anxiety after they have spent Billions on R&D; (and marketing) to sell you their latest patented pill.

Well just to be clear, I didn't create this thread because I wanted kava to be mainstream. I'm actually very happy nobody knows about it. If it were popular it would have pharm. lobbiests (spelling?) would be coming out of the woodwork to get it outlawed. happy krunking to all.
