Have had some Tongan kava sitting in the fridge since maybe Friday. When I checked on it there was a bunch of waterish kava on top and thick sludge of kava underneath. I've already cleaned it out -- better safe than sorry -- but my real question is, is this stuff edible? What is it? zomg. I usually consume kava the day that I prepare it. It smelled like kava, was thick and slimy. When I poked it with my finger it left an indent that took a long time to fill.

Seriously, I've never had that experience but I suspect you have had some bacterial growth starting. Perhaps some fermentation. Good call throwing it out.

The good stuff settles to the bottom, that's why stirring is important. I would chuck it too since it's been too many days in the fridge.

Actually, I have drank Kava in the fridge up to a week after making it. It is fine, trust me. Just mix it together and enjoy.

Yea the taste will be off but you could still mix it up and drink it if you dont wanna waste it.

If that's the case I don't think I'd mix it, just eat it straight. Was really curious about the sludge. Incidentally I've noticed, since letting the kava soak in hotter water, that the resulting beverage is thicker.
