Seriously though... You should give @Kavasutra a break until you have a civil discussion with him about it (i.e. don't jump to conclusions)
I've run plenty of businesses. In all of them the objective is to survive and hopefully make a little money from your efforts. I don't know of any kava bar in the U.S. that exactly emulates a Nakamal in the islands, because they 'have' to appeal to their customers (not to you). I don't presume to have any idea what type of customers are in New York. So there may be very good business reasons for the way he is operating. But who would know without some discourse first??
