(Just a warning for those of you who might struggle with substance abuse, this post talks about benzodiazepines and kinda (not really) references abusing them).
Hello! Basically, I'm looking for a kava that has similar effects to that of Xanax. Recently I've been going through a difficult time anxiety wise, and I've been taking a little more of it than I'm comfortable with, considering how easy it can be to get addicted. I'd really like a kava that is mildly to moderately sedating and very relaxing. I'm not entirely sure what the term 'heady' means in relation to kava, but I'm assuming it means something that might give you energy or alertness, which isn't something I'm interested in for now. Awhile back I did try Boroguru kava from a different online store, but I wasn't thrilled by the effects - it made me feel kind of dizzy and unpleasantly drunk, though I admit I might've been drinking too much and not stopping to notice more subtle effects, which is something I plan to be better about this time around. Just wanted to add that in case it might help with any recommendations.

I typically drink only heavier kavas, and have found GHKs Boroguru to be right up there in terms of sedative strength and anxiety relief. It's a Vanuatu kava and I'm a bit partial to the somewhat more predictable strength of kavas sourced from there. If you're looking for a sedative Hawaiian kava then Nene would be a good one. It's less punchy in effect, but still plays well to the sedative qualities of excellent Hawaiian kava.

Oh, and welcome to Kavaforums!

I really like their fijian for that purpose....actually I like basically all their offerings......but the fijian was very nice if I remember correctly....

Never ceases to amaze me how kava affects people differently, I find the Fiji kava from GHK to be heady, in fact, it's the headiest kava imo. @lxjms I to suffered from high anxiety and a little more then 2 months ago, I stopped taking Valium, I was on a high dose of 20-30mg a day for a little under one year. While I definitely do not recommend anyone going cold turkey on any Benzo, I had to and it forced me to look at alternatives. Thank God it happened, kava has been a life saver for me.

GHK is thus far my favorite distributor and the kavas I find to be most relaxing are nene and Hiwa, though the Hanakapi ai was quite strong too, though in my opinion, it makes for a better weekend kava.

I like Mo'i
@lxjms: you should try Mo'i. In fact, I would go so far as to say that you shouldn't even consider anything until you've tried Mo'i. Grab the micro or instant, if micro is too gritty for you.

I'm in your exact boat, and in my opinion, Mo'i is like this miracle herb that could save lives. For God's sakes, give it a shot before you spend any more time going down the endless rabbit hole of Kava strains and suppliers.

I'm aware that you said you want something heavy and sedating, but I don't think you realize just how heavy and sedating different strains of Kava can get. Mo'i is usually described as "heady," but since you already said you weren't a fan of Boroguru, and you want something similar to benzos, I would go directly to Mo'i - do not pass Go, do not collect $200, just go straight to Mo'i.

In conclusion... Mo'i!!!!

Thank you all so much for your responses! I ordered a pack of Nene, as I've been having a LOT of trouble sleeping lately and I've heard for many it puts them right to sleep. I'm hoping it'll affect me similarly. I think I'll use all of your suggestions (and the handy reviews here) as a guide for my next purchase(s). @MikeB you've definitely sold me on Mo'i, I'll probably try that next. I hope it works as well for me as it does for you!

Yeah moi is definitley a special one... nene was going to be my recommendation as well but thinking back when I was having anxiety attacks.. I avoided moi fr a long time because I always heard how heady it was ect... when I eventually tried it I fell in a love affair with Moi for a good 2 or so months Idk exactly hahahha but I actually just ordered more because I miss it... lol In fact whenever I veer from GHK I end up discovering ALOT of GREAT kavas but after awhile something is missing.. and then when I have a good mahakea or moi session I remember why I usto ONLY use GHK lol
