making a shell

Kava Curious
Hi guys.  I'm new here, and still pretty new with the kava, but this seems like a cool corner.  So, I decided to make my own coconut shell.  Seems like a good idea.  I've got it cut, and cleaned pretty well.  Just down to a bunch of sanding now I guess.  Has anyone here done this before?  I'm looking for some advice on achieving a nice dark finish.  Are your shells stained or glazed in any way?  or is it just a smooth sanded finish?  Any info on traditional manufacture?Another topic I have been curious about is coconut milk vs. coconut water.  I have heard both mentioned as a good soaking solution.  The terms are often used interchangeably, but are distinctly different things.  Seems the milk would have the fats for extraction, but the water would make a better beverage.  So, which is the one commonly used for this purpose?  Thanks for any feedback guys.  (smiley: grin)

Nakamalathome.com says there coconut shells are coated with a "FDA approved" sealant to avoid any diseases. Not sure if this is relevant?

I have no idea about the coconut milk/water. I cant seem to find the stuff anywhere :(. But seems like the milk would be a better solution since the fat is higher.

I ended up sealing it with some paraffin wax; heating and rubbing it into the shell. It worked pretty well, and gave a nice finish. Made mine nice and big too. Holds two cups easy. ;)

I hope you used the right kind of paraffin wax.

Yeah, coconut fiber is notorious for rotting and mildewing when used in gardening like hydroponics. Anything with a lot of moisture and wood can do that unless it's a wood with a natural oil that protects against that.

Coconut milk is thicker than coconut water. It's suppose to be really sweet but the thickness might throw you off. If you use the milk you'd probably have to mix it with water so it wasn't as thick. Coconut water on the other hand is pretty much...well...like water. It's still has a pretty sweet taste though so I just get those tall coconut "juice" cans and dump the whole thing into the bowl when I make kava with it.
