What's new

nausea

Ok, I did a search for this, but didn't come up with much.

So I'm new to kava. I started off with Kona Kava, then have gotten Stone and Tongan... recently, with the tongan I'm getting some serious nausea. Does this go away after you get used to it? Because it's a serious downer.

I love the effects of kava, it's wonderful... but when that nausea kicks in, it just downright bums me out.

I never experience those side effects anymore, (unless somewhat slightly). When I first started using kava I had nausea and a headache that ruined the experience. I don't remember how long it took before my system got use to it but I'm sure it only got easier with every use. (One rule I have is to never mix kava with anything sweet, that just makes a putrid taste.)

Well, Tonight, after reading much of this site made half gallon of Tongan. I realized that I'd been making it way too strong and then drinking wayyyyyy too much.

This batch is smooth and delightful. ( and goes great w a bit of almond milk I might add )

Making a more dilute batch helps for me as well. Sometimes, I will massage my stomach as well. That helps move things along if your stomach "locks up".

ok, so now I'm well into the kava now, and I am in love.

I just got some fiji in from Rex, and the stuff is great.

I realized that I was drinking way too much right off to get a buzz, and that just won't do. When I drink beer, I will often pour two beers in a big glass when I get home from work for enjoyment and relaxation... kava is much more subtle and respectable. You take your time with kava, and that's great.

I'm also finding that the more I drink kava, the less enjoyable alcohol is. Has anyone else experienced this?

I was never a big fan of alcohol, drinking it rarely. The last time I drank it, I was surprise how inferior the feeling was compared to kava.

No kidding...

Last night I had a rough ride for a few.

I went on a walk with my wife and friends, and I downed an extra shell's worth before heading out... oh my that Figan stuff hit me hard. I didn't like that. I ended up puking and had to fill my belly with some noodles and such to let it die down.

Rcoz I feel the same way. I really hate the feeling of being drunk. Kava allows one to relax the same as you would with a couple beers or so, but enjoy the clear headness of no alcohol and its not addictive like alcohol. Really a win, win for me.

Yeah, kava is also a great replacement trying to get off alcohol, if you tend to go overboard like me. I can't enjoy just a few beers, always becomes like ten. Glad to get off it.

I'm a moderate drinker, typically have 1-3 drinks if I'm drinking. I still enjoy a nice beer from time to time (any other beer snobs in the haus?) I much prefer the effects of kava though.

I would consider myself a beer snob. I love ***good*** beer. Bitter, bold, hugely flavored, unpasteurized wonderful beer.

And I'm finding that Kava actually lets me enjoy the actual beer, and not go for a buzz. It's great.

Yeah!

I was going hops crazy for a while with a lot of Dogfish Head and Victory. Now I'm all about a nice dark beer. Fav beer right now is probably the Robust Porter from Smuttynose. One of the unfortunate things about kava is that it can't be combined with food. I love finding the perfect taste to compliment a good beer. Then again while I like the taste of kava it's nowhere near as delicious as a good beer. Now that my better half and I are relocating to a larger apartment with a basement I may start aging some beers. I'd like to see what happens to a Victory Storm King if it's cellared for a few months. Fresh it's a bit all over the place to me. The hops overpowers the malt and the alcohol is too prominent. But given time to mellow out I think it'd be quite good.

My personal favorite is the Schlafly A-IPA. It's pretty incredible.

I've never been much for aging, because I love em too much to let em sit.
