Hello the group! I just purchased my first batch of micronized kava and am excited to find out about this marvelous substance. Must admit I was a bit put off reading somewhere - perhaps the Dr. Weill site - that kava and statins shouldn't be mixed (I take Lipitor, have for years). I'd love it if some experienced members here could give me an opinion or two.

And then question #2: how should I take it? T&W, make tea? Again, as a total neophyte I'll be guided by people's good judgment.

Many thanks in advance for your help and wisdom!

Bix

Hello, Bix. Welcome to our slice of the internet. Glad to have you! I would highly suggest taking a peek at our "New to kava" tab a the top and read through the faq. I'll have to let other members chime in on the statins. The best way for a person new to kava is to invest in some instant kava as well as some medium grind (along with a good quality strainer) to start out. The instant will give you a great feeling for what kava is like, and the medium grind will help you get started with making traditional kava.

Again, welcome and never hesitate to ask if you have questions :)

Thanks very much, Kap'm. I'd done a quick glance through of the NTK tab and read some of the faqs. I'll dive in deeper now!

Hey Bix,
I'm pretty much a noob myself. So far I've tried Instant Green, Kandies, Malekula Magic and Opihikao. Only really started feeling it a month in (Reverse tolerance thing) on the Opihikao, which I'm finding very nice now. Something I've definitely found to be true is to only use it on a very empty stomach, otherwise effects have been minimal to none for me. Keep us up-to-date on how it's going for you.

Thanks for your input, t-v. I'm still collating facts, as it were, and hope to take the first plunge this weekend. The empty stomach thing is something I've found to be true with other herbal substances so that's good advice. Interesting about the reverse tolerance. That's something new to me. It should be interesting!

Okay. Last night I tried kava for the first time using Kavalot's recipe for preparing micronized material. An excellent method that worked exactly as advertised. I was apprehensive about potential stomach issues so only drank half a tall glass on an empty stomach. The result was: zip. So I guess reverse tolerance is in play and I look forward to doing it again. Would people recommend I drink more than about 8 ounces at a sitting? And should I be trying it every day in order to get past the tolerance issue? Actually I'll run out of product long before that so will be looking to some of the vendors here for a re-up.

Thanks, fellow Kavaliers!

Welcome to the forum @Bix ! ::awesomesmiles:: So the good doctor said you shouldn't mix lupitor and kava huh? Well, I've been doing it for 2 years now. No wonder I'm all f__ed up!
Just kidding. In reality, all my blood tests have been outstanding. So I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones! :D The problem with all these doctors saying stuff about kava is that (a.) They is no evidence of anything like that and it is pure speculation on their part. (b). Their sponsors, "big pharma", probably pay them to say that so they can continue selling Xanax, Valium, and the rest of that stuff. I know I said this the other day but I need to remind everyone that the sales of Valium and like products nosedived 30 percent during the European Kava Craze of the 1990s. If you were big pharma, then something had to be done pronto. :sneaky: So the German Government started the Kava Liver Scare of the 1990s.

Disclaimer. Of course it is pure coincidence that those events transpired in the 1990s and Jman is not insinuating that Big Pharma had anything to do with it. In fact, Jman is just joking around like he usually does so you can put down the phone and give your lawyers the day off. Ya see, there goes another joke ... a lawyer joke.

Deleted User01 - really appreciate your post! I did take the statin warning with a large grain of salt (What? Trying to protect their obscene profits... Why, how could anyone think that??) but it's always great to get some reassurance from the trenches. I look forward to continuing to explore this new-for-me substance!
