Newbie
Hello everyone, I am new to the board and had my first experience with kava tonight and thought I would share it. I have been reading the reviews of various kavas for about a week or so and finally decided to give it a try. I lift weights regularly (though I have been on hiatus this semester, which will soon be resolved) and wanted something that could give me a good, calming buzz
similar to alcohol but without the catabolism and hangovers it brings with it. For my first try, I ordered N@H's black sand, stone and wow! kavas. Having read that stone is pretty potent and wow! is downright badass, I obviously opted for the black sand for my first time. Most descriptions of black sand on both N@H's site and on Kavasseur's blog seemed to show that this kava is fairly user friendly. Anyways, to the nitty gritty: I followed Kavasseur's recipe nearly to a tee, with the only difference being that I substituted the fourth cup of water with a cup of whole milk for better absorption, although I had already added a tablespoon of soy lecithin. I waited 15-20 minutes between bowls and wound up consuming 5 of them. I could definitely feel the effects after the third bowl when I sat in a lazy boy and felt as though my body was melting into it. I wound up with a buzz that was similar to alcohol and similar to cannabis yet completely different at the same time... hard to explain. In the end, 5 bowls may have been a little too much for my first time, as my coordination was quite off and I wound up developing a mild case of nausea. My roommate joined me in this trial, and consumed only 3 bowls. He, however, is very sensitive in the stomach with nearly everything, and wound up vomiting around an hour after his last bowl (I do believe he induced this vomiting, as is common with him after drinking alcohol). Overall, I had a good experience. It was a great buzz that was very euphoric and new to me. Aside from the nausea, the only real downside is that when I attempted to go to sleep, I felt quite energized and unable to wind down (which is why I am awake and typing this now with work in four hours). An effect of this particular strain perhaps, or maybe just an individual reaction. Nevertheless, I will be trying another batch of kava tomorrow, this time the stone variety, but I will limit myself to two bowls for a good bit to see how it feels, and I don't plan on progressing past 4. My girlfriend and two buddies will be joining in tomorrow, although I am only letting them start off with the black sand blend to see how they react first. It should be a fun night, hopefully full of intellectual conversation and kava goodness (smiley: happy)
