What's new

New to Kava

Yvonne

Kava Curious
Hello,

I am totally new to Kava and I would like to know if anyone knows the therapeutic dosage for tension headaches and muscular pain. I realize it's a difficult question but I really only want to take the smallest amount on a daily basis to help with the pain associated with the headaches (primarily).

I have been able to purchase some finely ground high grade Fijian root powder, (well so I was told). I am unable for various reasons to purchase from any providers listed on this site, so I have to go with trust on this one. Anyhow if anyone could tell me how much I should begin with and work up from that for the required effect, I would be really grateful and happy. I have 100 grams of the powder so I don't want to waste it as it is pretty difficult for me to obtain.

Best preparation method would be good as well. I did click on the link that is provided at the beginners faqs page, but it didn't seem to take me anywhere. I have the muslin and cheesecloth to make a bag (not sure which is best but one of you guys might be able to advise) and I also have lecithin, so it's all ready to go but I just need a little help here.

With thanks and Love,
Yvonne.

Welcome Yvonne. I think you will have to figure that out by trail and error. If you are new to Kava, you will have to get over Reverse Tolerance. In other words, no effects for about 1 week before you start to feel it. Then you have to figure out if the high Kavain Kavas are good for the headache or if you will require a more analgesic type Kava (ie. Papa Kea from GHK). There are some members who have used Kava for headaches so hang in there and let's see if they have any ideas for you.

Thanks Deleted User01,

I didn't even realize there was a difference, but I would never be able to get that one unless I travelled (I am presuming it's somewhere in the States) to get it, then I can bring back 2 kgs and that's it. I wonder if you know where it is available from, I mean what countries.

Kindest regards
Yvonne.

The ones that I'm currently "in to" are from Hawaii. In fact, Gourmet Hawaiian Kava is getting ready to release a variety of Instant Kavas that would be very convenient for a Newbie. You could take it to work and mix it in water or juice. The Micronized he sells would be a step up in potency but it is a little bit grittier but not by much. He sells a sampler pack and so does BKH. I like the GHK sampler because it has both instant, micronized, and powder and it represents Kavas with different effects. You are fishing for a Kava that has the "effects" that will help with your headaches.

Wow that sounds like just the ticket. I just went on to the website but I couldn't find a contact for GHK. I wonder if anyone has a contact for the farmer who is producing the Kava in Hawaii. I am going off travelling later this year and I can actually bring 2 kgs back with me, one of the places I am going to is Hawaii so if I had a contact I could contact them direct. Sounds like a lot of effort but I live in country where it is a banned substance, however you are allowed to bring in 2 kgs in your hand luggage. It would seem the only way to get the proper stuff and try it.

Thanks again.
Yvonne.

That is the email for Chris at Gourmet Hawaiian Kava (GHK). I think they are like 12 hours behind/in front? of us. He will probably see this post when he wakes up and respond to it. I think he would be more than happy to have you visit his farm and see all the varieties of Kavas that he is trying to Grow. He is also logger and he grows KOA trees for the wood. Thus the koawood prefix. The man works the land hard.

Hello and welcome, Yvonne. I am someone who has had total elimination daily of tension headaches (over 10 years worth) and experienced great improvements with muscular and connective tissue inflammation.

Sometimes you have to experiment to find the kava that is right for you. I found that the kava was not an instant fix, but that regular consumption has 100% gotten rid of my tension headaches. I just noticed one day soon after beginning kava that they were gone. So you may not know if the kava is effective for you on that front or not until you have been drinking it a week or two.

Kava dosage is very individual, we can all use different amounts and feel similar effects. I personally strain 50 grams a day, but my husband gets the same effects I do from only 15 grams of strained root. And as Deleted User01 mentioned, you may have to get over reverse tolerance. You might get great effects from a kava, but not until you've had a few sessions with it.

Especially in the beginning (but even now still) I have found it most helpful (in regards to alleviating muscle pain/headaches) to dose my kava throughout the day. I would often drink even the most sedating kavas in the morning, albeit in small doses. If you are sensitive to the sedating effects of kava this might not be a great idea. I have found the Hawaiian kavas are fantastic for taking in the daytime, definitely see Chris @Gourmet Hawaiian Kava when you go to Hawaii. He sells kava in micronized form which will stretch a whole lot farther than ground root which must be strained before drinking. And bring friends who will bring some kava back for you on the return trip too :D

HI Yvonne, welcome to the Kava Forums. I sent you an email and you are more than welcome to stop by and see me if you do make it to the Big Island of Hawaii and if you go to another Island then I can send it to you, it only takes 1-2 days to mail something inter-island. Please let me know if you have any questions, aloha.

Gosh I haven't been here for a few days and it is so wonderful to feel and see the support that you are all offering.

Thanks Chris for your info and as you know we have already been in touch. Thanks Deleted User01 and Hedgehog and Kavadude for your welcomes and advice as well. And Violet thank-you so much for the post that you so kindly bothered to do regarding the tension headache relief, it gives me immense confidence that I too will get full relief in the Kava time.

Now what have I been up to in the last few days. Well I have been doing copious amounts of research and also talking with Chris from GHK via e-mail, and also a man in New Zealand who runs an on-line ordering company called www.justpacifictrading.com Both Chris and Nelson have been tremendously helpful and it looks like I will probably go with Nelson in NZ as it is closer for me to get to ( I live in Australia), and he is sourcing the very best Kava from Vanuatu. It would be good to know if anyone here has tried his Kava, but I have spoken to him direct and feel really confident about getting some quality Kava from him.

As far as me getting hold of Kava in the interim period, I managed to purchase a practitioners product from a health food store here called "Nutrition Care," they make a water extracted Kava which I have been taking since yesterday, and I am certain that it has already had an effect on the tension headaches. On taking it, it feels very pure and the effect is almost instant, and the tongue numbs up immediately. Each 5 ml teaspoon has 714.25 mgs of the root and 71.4 mgs of the lactones. I took 5 teaspoons yesterday over a 10 hour period and by the final dose the head pain was totally manageable. I am going to play around with this product until I can get some good quality Kava here myself. In the meantime it would be interesting to know if anyone here has had any experience with this particular product?

All in all I am totally confident in using Kava for this condition, and now, especially with your post Violet, I really can see the light at the end of the tunnel and freedom from the debilitating pain of constant tension headaches.

Thanks again,
Yvonne.

Hi Yvonne, I hope that it works out for your head aches, this company is a good one and they get there kava from a good supplier. If you can find someone in NZ I can send my kava to them for you to try. Let me know if I can help. Aloha.

Yvonne.
The proper stuff is to get to vanuatu ($450 return air fare from bris) Port Vila. Its made on the day from fresh root….not powder. Its chalk & cheese to compare them. I go over ex brissy twice a year solely to drink their kava. You can if you wish also buy powdered kava there & you can bring back 2kg per person over 18 years. If you try & get some sent into the country via post you will loose your money & get a questioning letter from customs. Once you drink fresh kava it will completely ruin drinking powdered kava for ever on taste, strength , they are worlds apart.
