"14 houses and a truck have been destroyed in an arson attack in a village on Tanna island in Vanuatu. A source told the Daily Post Newspaper that what triggered the violence was the theft of a pig by a man from the village. The source says the alleged attackers ensured the men were feeling the effects of kava and would not respond to the arson."

I wish there was a way to know more, like do the locals really get that messed up on kava, what strain were they taking, etc ... I've never heard of Tanna Island or kava from there but I'm new to researching such things ..

Having your village burned down whilst paralysed from the eyeballs down by a couple of large chewed Tanna shells would be a real inconvenience. Hopefully they were already outside and far enough from the flames that they didn't have to move too much..

Perhaps the Kava was strong ... but perhaps the pull of Pork Chops was even stronger. One never knows ...

There's something inherently funny about the idea of someone stealing a pig.
I managed some property in Costa Rica for a while and had a beef stolen. They cut the barb wire and led it up into a pick up truck. It wasn't my steer, I just had the acreage and rented the land for grazing cattle. But the farmer got family and friends together and went and "convinced" the thief to give it back. Quite literally a posse on horseback.

And I live in Texas and you can get shot for that and everyone would cheer. The cops would probably jump in and kick the thief in the ribs a few times. The point being, I don't care how strong the kava, you ain't letting that pork roast disappear without a fight. In the case of the Islanders, that pig might represent 2 or 3 months worth of food and it's not funny when it's gone. That's the stand they take in Texas anyway and I'm sure it's no different around the world.

If it was a male pig it's worth more than just food. Not sure about Tanna, but in northern Vanuatu big boars are killed at grade taking ceremonies and the meat is shared around.

Basically, a man looking to climb the social/political ranks has to keep and feed pigs for several years until they're big enough, then sponsor a festival where he gives away all kinds of food and festivities for everyone, at his own expense. The curled tusks are themselves quite valuable, too: 18,000vt a piece.

So are you saying we should start a curled tusk importing business? American pork processing plants or somewhere has to have them for cheap lol.

American pork doesn't grow old enough for big tusks, plus the animal welfare people might be concerned because you have to knock out some teeth so the tusks will curl the right way.
