I am thinking about getting one but I don't like the fact you can only use two tablespoons. Tell me your thoughts on it

I think I'm going to get one. The thing is that if I want to get a lot of use out of it I'll have to get 2 or 3 of the alubal, and they are not cheap.

I've had mine since it first came out and i haven't had to replace the balls. Looking forward to the Aluball XL.

I personally only use it for quick, on the go shells, at a time prior to when I intend on making my regular hand kneaded batch.
Many people love it and use it almost exclusively. To get the most out of it, it really requires a lot of rigorous shaking, which turns out to be much more energy intensive than kneading and ends up not saving much time. But for a quickie, on the run, not worrying about 'getting the most out of it'...it's spectacular.

Oooh an XL version would be sweet! When is that supposed to be available do you know? I like the convenience of the aluball. I think it's a handy/useful thing to have. :) Especially being a newb, I lack confidence in my hand prep. skills. After I thought I had gotten everything out of the hand kneading, I transferred the wet kava (is that called makas??) to the aluball with some clean water and gave it a shake to be sure I had gotten enough out of the kneading and it was reassuring to see it coming out clear and knowing that I did an okay job kneading. The aluball will be handy for me while I learn and get the hang of the hand prep. :)

Is the alubal xl that is coming out or just something you made up? Either way that would be awesome

I use 2 aluballs and it works out very well.
Do you mean simultaneously? I bought just a single ball first after reading about their containers cracking (I already had two protein shakers) but I just placed an order for the whole thing thinking 2 at the same time might do the trick.
I have only used mine twice but the more effective time I replaced the kava with two more tbs and shook for another couple of minutes. Now that seems silly knowing that some people do multiple washes with the same kava when doing a traditional prep.

Yes that's what I mean, I use 2 balls at once with roughly 600ml of water. I use approximately 4tbs and do 2 washes. Using as much water as possible helps in keeping the aluballs from smashing the bottom and possibly cracking the bottle.

I know some people have had their shaker bottle break, it has never happened to me. it could just be luck and I do shake the bottle vigorously. I think the trick is two fold.

Don't overfill each ball and add enough liquid.

Double ball is the way to do it. Fill the bottle 7/8ths full, turn upside down, and shake it side to side. I may be overly cautious, but slamming the balls up and down the length of the bottle is harder on them.

Also, if you get the 4 pack you can mix-n-match to make half pink, half green balls.

My take on the Aluball, and get ready it's going to be somewhat different:

When Chris1052 sold me his Squanch he included his Aluball which looks to me in almost new condition (thanks!) and naturally with my experimental bent I've been trying it out.

I find the Aluball is really useful, but not in any way as a replacement for trad prep.

1. Less is more. Using 2 TBS in 500 ml shaking for a minute gives something like a third wash of trad prep. Much better, I find, is use no more than 1.5 TBS and use less water, 350 or 400 ml max on the 1st wash and about 250 ml for the second. You can't really go lower than 250, though as you need water to cushion the ball from cracking.

2. Don't shake as hard, shake longer. In fact, what I have to do I wouldn't even call "shaking" it's more like sloshing back and forth, and you kind of get in rythm with the flow of the water back and forth, like I would in the bathtub as a kid. And I don't go by timing, I go by what the grog looks like. It's not ready till it looks like it's ready, till it is actually grog instead of a weak wash that looks like old dishwashing water.

3. Aluball can make good kava not as good, by making a grog that doesn't do the root justice, BUT, and there's a great big BUT here, a huge BUT ---------- Aluball is great for kava that isn't great kava! This is the best most useful thing about the Aluball I have found: Don't use it for making the premium grinds, it makes them lesser. Use it with the bidget cheapo grinds, it makes them better and you get more out of that cheapo root.

With the Aluball and budget root (Mood & Mind, Best Fji, Wakacon, etc) you can get more grog and I presume kavalactones than doing trad prep. And it's better this way, better tasting and better effects. My ideal Aluball mix for now is 1 TBS Mood & Mind generic Vanuatu root with 1/2 TBS Best Fiji Lawena or 1 TBS plus 1 tsp Best Fiji Waka with 2 tsp Best Fiji Lawena. And then gently sloosh for at least two minutes, more like three or four. Make 350 or 400 ml on the first wash, then 250 ml on the second, combine the two and ice it up. That's a lot of grog for 1.5 TBS and a nice bit of effect. Excellent for daytime kava drinking, and very very affordable, best bang for buck. Good for when you don't want a lot of kava, or for when you just got off work, or you're making some for an hour on the rowboat or a long walk. Or for when you want some grog to sip while doing a big bunch of trad prep. All sorts of really excellent uses.

The Aluball is a hit with me.

Oh, and after the two washes, I put the makas in a container in the freezer and when I have enough, I'll probably blend in a blender for a couple minutes then pour ina straner bag and knead for 10 minutes and probably get a nice litre of mixed stuff, good for making like mocha drinks with or whatever.

I haven't done enough traditional prep to really know how much difference there is. I've used the aluball daily for about 6 months now, 1-2 tbsp, one ball, two washes in 350-400ml water. The second wash is not nearly as thick as the first so I figure I've gotten a lot of what I need out of the kava. I shake for about a minute, and as Krunkie mentioned, I try not to hit the ends of the bottle. I find if I shake it at the right rhythm it'll slosh in the water like he said, and not bang on the ends. I absolutely love mine and bought 2 bottles so I could have them conveniently in different places. One ball sees a lot more use than the other and is a bit scratched but still works great. The other one doesn't look nearly as used. I love Kavafied's Kava too, everything I've gotten so far, the Bati, Tonga, and Kava Supreme have been great.

What I did tonight that worked pretty well was prepping Kava Tonga in the Aluball. Using 2 TBS root and about 300 ml water, I made a fairly strong big shell, then put the makas in a bowl. Made another shell with a new 2 TBS, and then another, adding the makas to the bowl. Of course, I took my time drinking them. With some ice each filled a good size tumbler. Then after I'd done that, I put the collection of makas in a bag and kneaded it, using 500 ml or so for 10 minutes. This made two more very acceptable large shells.

That's some good mileage out of your kava. I'll have to try that!
