Proper kava preparation

Kava Curious
Hi, i just tried my first batch of kava from Kona kava, the experience was kind of weak but still enojyable.
My question here is; how do i know if my kavalactones and other goodies are being extracted into my brew ?
Basically today i did another brew with twice the ammount of kava , 120 ml or 57 g and used 2 cups of water and 1 cup of milk,to this i added a teaspoon of soy lecithin and i blended this for 4 minutes.
After that i strained it all through my muslin cloth but the kava inside the mulsin bag was still kind of oily. So i got 1 cup of water and just kneaded the kava for a few minutes and after that ,the kava was still oily, after that i just dumped it becaused my hands were tired.
But the kava being still oily ,means that lots of the goodies have not been extracted right ?

ok so you use 1 cup root but how long does it take you to drink this ? do you drink this within an hour or within the whole day or something like that ?

Also whats the proper way of drinking kava ? is it by chugging it as fast as you can or drink little gulps at a time ?

Whats your favorite method ?

Drink the Kava slowly but quickly. Sounds confusing, but basically I would recommend drinking 4 ounces at a time pretty quickly, but every 10 or 15 minutes. Drink until you're happy or you've reached a good place.

For me the first few servings I like to up it to 6oz or a full cup and then back to 4oz. I take advantage of the gag reflex not kicking in that soon, but it depends on the kava. And having the kava really cold helps a lot.

So I've been experimenting with preparation, and I think I've come on to a good set up. Since the active ingredients are fat soluble, I use the following:Canola OilAlmond MilkLightly heated waterAnd of course, vigorous straining. So what do you guys think? Am I on to something? I figure doing this maximizes the extraction of all the active constituents, plus makes it hydrating on top of relaxing.

Well, as long as some little particles and colour are getting in the water, your getting the goods. Also, I HIGHLY recommend a different kava. Check out bulakavahouse.com and kavabyrex.com

Hi guys. I am new to kava as well. I ordered some Kava root from Kona Kava (from what I hear here it was a mistake) but I have to say it had a nice relaxing effect on me, very calming. I am using kava to reduce drinking due to anxiety (I just spent the last two years doing humanitarian work in some scary places like Congo and have a lot of anxiety-obviously I'm also pursuing counseling but I found myself drinking way more than I ever have and also gaining like 45 pounds!). I have ordered some from Paradise which I'm excited for. What I'm wondering is how much Kava do y'all consume, I watched the video and the guy was making a cup of kava-is that just for like two people's consumption. It seems like the habit could get expensive really quick! How much Kava are you guys drinking if you're drinking between 3-5 times a week? How many 1 lb bags are you going through? Also can you put the kava in the fridge if you don't feel like drinking all the batch? Cheers and thanks for all the help for this novice kava drinker (smiley: wink)

Usually about 4-6 tablespoons a night. I go by the 2 tablespoons per cup of water method. This still is very strong, and it can make a 1 pound bag last nearly up to a month. And yes you can, I have done it before, but I wouldn't leave it for more than a day. Some people hate that you have to take 15 min to prepare the kava, but I enjoy squeezing and kneading the kava very much, it's like a stress reliever all in its own and gives you a chance to prime your mind and find a nice calm mood to help you better enjoy the kava.

Fleurdunil, if you're talking about the Nakamal@Home video, the general consensus is that it's way too much kava for that amount of water. I use this guideline - http://www.kavabyrex.com/makekava.html

I just used two rounded (not heaping) tablespoons of Isa to one pint of water. I tend to err in the side of overdoing, because how can you know if you've had enough, until you have had too much?

To be fair to the Nakamal@Home instructions, they do make a strong beverage, and they are probably devised for very coarsely ground root.

As far as how much kava people are drinking, I can't answer the question as written. I drink kava about seven nights and four days per week, so about 11 times. I'm really not going through that many bags, but I do tend to have a "stash" going. I have kava extract jars everywhere I might find myself. I keep instant kava at both the palaces I frequent. I have half-pound bags of Vanuatu and Fiji lateral root powders (the latter I have yet to open), a pound of Isa and another pound of Isa on the way from a different vendor. I have one, just one, Ozia kava candy to my name, but I have two wholesale cases on the way and they should be here by Thursday. I may even give them as stocking stuffers, but without a lava-trained brain it may be fruitless.

I do generally re-use kava a second time, unless I am just using a tablespoon or two. This does help make kava cost effective.

Consider buying in bulk, and next year for Frum's sake be on the lookout for Cyber Monday sales. Three vendors advertised here, and I received a spam for 70% that cleverly-named and over-hyped product that is basically an alcohol-based tincture in a spray bottle.
