Rash

I’ve been drinking noble kava prepared the traditional way for about 6 months. I drink it most evening to help me relax after work and sleep. It has been miraculous. I’ve noticed this rash on my upper back for the last 2 days . It’s not particularly itchy. Does it look like kava dermopathy? I have 30g per session in about 800ml of water.

It is the most common side effect from kava consumption, I haven't had any kava in over a month and last week I had a flare up on my hands, typical dermopathy as well, it was kind of weird given the fact that I haven't drank any in a while. Anyway, to your point, I think if you manage to cut back or take a break from the kava, it will be the easiest way to reverse the reaction. Sometimes you need a lotion to speed things along, most of us use Amlactin but I've heard from another member here recently of an alternative on Amazon for sensitive skin (but costly).

A rash is not common from kava.... Dermopathy is but that is different from a rash. When I hear rash I think red irritated skin. below is demopathy

I have always associated a rash with kava in this context because a few red bumps will develop into a rash, as we tend to sctratch it, but you could be right. I am speculating it based on the info provided.

that sounds like Eczema which kava probably doesn't help prevent lol

The latency between kava consumption and the rash tells me it's likely something else. Urticaria, or this specific skin condition, can have a number of causes, however we have seen allergic reactions similar to this to kava in the past. The one thing that makes me think it's different is that latency between consumption and negative effect.

I’m hoping it’s something else. Kava has been a game changer in my life.

Did you do any sweating in that area? I had a rash on my belly but I had been soaking my workshirt with sweat five nights in a row prior to that. Coconut oil helped it heal up a lot, plus a touch of calamine lotion at night. I do get dry hands from kava, as well as from handling too much soap and chemicals. Overall, my skin is pretty dry, and while I have no doubt most of it is due to kava, I'll have spells where I do not feel any dryness despite continuing to drink kava. It is not clear what causes the dryness, maybe stress or dehydration in addition to kava drinking causes dermopathy more than regular kava drinking does.

@Kapmcrunk How much latency do you give before you suspect it's not kava? Coincidentally, I seem to get a good portion of my dermo when I haven't had a shell in a week.

this is true it comes afrer consecutive weeks of heavy usage or for veterans even after a break. I suspect that borngoru has the worst dermo etleast for me

I've just had a 3 days off kava. That erythematous patch is resolving (y) ( I'm a dermatology nurse specialist so I have a great toolbox for skin concerns ;)).
I don't hydrate enough when I drink Kava because of not feeling thirsty but I will try to force myself to drink more water after my kava sessions from now on.

I do tend to sweat a fair bit, mostly when I exercise, but this has been occurring for as long as I can remember and I don't seem to get sweat rash. My skin has been very dry lately as I sunburnt during my recent holidays, when I got back home and had my usual kava session every night I didn't rehydrate. I just don't feel the thirst . I just got to drink more fluid...
I can't give up the shells... hell no! I'll find a way around it if it is dermo

Borogoru is the first one I had when got back from holidays, needed something heavy to help me get over jet lag, then the day after I returned to my favourite blend Tabu Faea @myKavahut. So maybe yes it could be that single cultivar borogoru.

Kava makes me thirsty, it could be a gift it doesn't for you. Drink water before a shell?

@Catlady , have you ever had a recipe with more root and less water? If that doesn't make you thirsty we can enter the kava drinking championship right away!

In your next photo, skin looks a little better. My skin is completely healed up, it's been chilly lately so I haven't sweat much. A curious idea since you may have cats (screenname - I have four cats), did you check the beddings to be sure they are free from: cat fur, sand, chemicals? The original photo appears too populated in red dots to be the average bug bite so I decided maybe it could be coming from some topical irritation such as, too much fur in that area, coarse particles like sand, or poorly rinsed detergent or sterilizer? Make sure there is no leftover sodium hydroxide(some detergents such as Tide carry this ingredient) or sodium metasilicate(charlies natural laundry soap), QAC's(odoban), or sulfates(dishsoap) on beddings, those chems are particularly irritating to skin. I like to wash laundry with plenty of soap and rinse twice, or, rinse until the water looks and smells clean.

by the way, stick around please, a dermotology nurse is of very high value around here!

yes, I'm trying to drink more fluids, coconut water is easy to drink. I must have been a camel in another life, I rarely feel thirsty. 500ml of water is the smallest amount I have used for 45g of kava roots. That was before the reverse tolerance kicked in :woot:. A Kava drinking championship lol YES!!!
I do have 2 cats, (two cheeky siamese) they are indoors most of the time, I don't think it is their fur.
I'm thinking that skin flair up came from a combination of things: not drinking enough water, dry skin from sunburn and long flight and kava, possibly boroguru. 3 days break and topical vitamin B, ceramides and hyaluronic acid has help repair. I'm back enjoying my evening shells ::chugger::!
I'll be more than happy to help anyone with skin concerns I may be able to assist with some advice ✌

I have a siamese cat in my home, when I tell people they go, "No way! A hairless cat!". I looked up hairless cats, the Sphynx and derivatives were "bred" in 1966, I believe.

I've got a 1/2 cornish rex 1/2 Sphynx. What they don't tell you is that the hair really does a great job muffling the meows. Thing is loud as a motorbike.
