Kava Curious
I definately over-did it over the course of the holidays with Kava..... I decided I was gonna treat myself to the WoW! Stone and Solomon varieties from nakamal at home. I didn't realize, erroneously how long each would last and sort of became extendedly krunked from thursday on thru new years day...... I realize I clearly should not have had that much Kava (lots o' shells of each variety) and feel like hell at the moment.... Emotionally off, mentally off.... just off..... my muscles and legs feel restless as well..... I feel like a fool and a jerk for not having respected my Kava appropriately..... my question is has this happenned to anyone here, or has anyone experienced emotional distress post Kava use?  any suggested remedy or inclination as to how long one typically feels this way post over-kava-indulgence? additionally, should I obstain from even my super weak kava tea before sleep until I feel better? any advice would be helpful....

Well, I did the same thing, on purpose. (Without the Solomon, though... that stuff is beyond my comfort zone). My advice is to look for Monster Kaos. I wouldn't normally recommend it, but it's mostly juice (anything sugar-free is going to mess up your stomach even more), will inject a massive amount of caffeine into your system as well as several other vitamins. You may need two 16 oz cans (I did), but one may be enough. If that doesn't work... lots of fruit or even candy... sugar is traditionally what cures kava overdose per kava creation mythologies.

If your stomach is still messed up, try ginger tea. For best results, next time you do something like this, drink ginger tea between shells. Never underestimate the soothing powers of ginger.

After building a fairly respectable reverse tolerance over the course of 2010, the massive mega-dosing had the unintentional effect of lowering my kava threshold even further. If I continue the same pattern, by 2014 I'll be able to krunk-out just by looking at kava... well, I might have to really stare intently at it.

The best thing to do would be to not have any kava for a while. Pumping yourself full of caffeine will just add another dog to the pile.

Drink lots of water. It should go away in a few days.

I like to take a b-complex with Emergen-C http://www.emergenc.com/, lots of water . I also take some niacin and I'm not sure if it's a coincidence but I haven't had dry or itchy skin from kava since. Just make sure the nician is *not* the non-flush kind and start off with a small dose (100mg). I like it on an empty stomach but the bottle says otherwise.

yea, kava some times tilts my mental state to the negative side (very irritable, depressed, etc), don't know how to quickly fix that, usually lasts me a few days or so. But you can look up 5-htp (helps with serotonin if that's the issue.

maybe moderate aerobic exercising, get the blood going?

The elephant in the room, definitely.

I have had some pretty bad experiences with Kava, believe or not. The problem is that I never know when to expect it. It typically occurs with some kinds of Vanuatu Kavas like Wow!, Stone, Vanuatu 3, or Black Sand. It can make for a horrible few days, and has even caused Kavasseur to want to throw in the towel. Fortunately, it passes after a few days and you'll want to get back on the train just after. But I've definitely had days where I've told myself "it's over."

Lots of water, exercise, and patience.

I really thank you guys for your quick and calm replies.... That is, not just telling me I'm a fool for over-indulgence. I am equally amazed that you guys have experienced the same the same thing.... So in the interest of moderation and being OK' the next day, what varieties of Kava do you guys find to be "safest", and/or more accurately what type of routines do you guys maintain as far that goes????........

This is a wonderful medicine.... Truly having treated me to some of the only good sleep I have found in years..... I am really careful about what I put in my body for a variety of reasons, and Kava seems to be the most effective and non-addictive night cap around, but I definately saw its potential evil if misused..... That being said.... I really must express did not realize what Vanuatu Kava of that quality was capable of.... I was only really familiar with the shelf variety Yogi Tea and extracts and thought I would treat myself to what I believed a much higher quality of that.... I should have researched things far more then I did.... I do not wish to experience this again, though do feel those strong Vanuatu Kava's certainly have their place.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, I am feeling much better though it took a few days.... A note above about the suggestion of 5-htp. I have had some experience with it and I must say that is a substance that should not be taken lightly.... Nor should any that messes with your brain chemistry, particularly in conjuction with Kava, depending on your aim.... If your aim is to use the medicine (Kava) as responsably as possible as a night cap, throwing 5-htp or anything else aside from chamomile or valerian in the mix can prove REALLY mind alterring.... And that to me is the appeal of the Kava, no dangerous alteration in brain chemistry long term and non-addictive. When you start playing with serotonin, dopamine, et cetera.... with any type of anti-depressants things can get sticky in my exerpience.......... But I may be a bit of an "all-natural" extremist, in that I just believe as far as things go one should try to become mentally balanced without the aid of much of anything..... Now all that being said let me just say I am merely voicing a word of caution based on my expereience and am not passing any judgement or casting any stones with these statements.

Once again thanks for the replies and I am really looking forward to learning alot more from you guys.

Oh man, I went insane on St. John's Wort and 5-htp. Thing is, it wasn't the sort of delusion that would cause a person to be locked up for the good of themselves and society. It was more the sort of insanity that would make you believe your slutty otherkin girlfriend really was a unicorn and wasn't going to use sex as an icebreaker, or some shit like that. Since both St. John's Wort and Kava do their thing through MAO inhibition, I seriously don't want to see what 5-htp will do to kava. If I took it, I'd probably wind up believing that I was from Greece and not Tanna.

I do recant what I said about Kaos. I think it is the best tasting and best acting of the line, and I don't know if glucuronolactones compete with kavalactones or not, but energy drinks are a bad (and expensive) habit to fall into. Because of the pressures of Royalty, I often wind up in a Judy Garland-like state of using energy drinks to wake me up and kava and doxylamine succinate to put me to bed.

I don't think you're foolish. It is actually quite wise to drink too much kava, because how can you know if you've ever had enough until you've had too much? I've never drank so much kava because of D.A.R.E. ("drugs are really expensive") and because after a quart it's hard to justify more. However, New Years Weekend I was drinking to save my sanity. Kava was the only thing that protected me from my Royal Inlaws and the only thing that protected them from the Righteous Fury of Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Brother of John Frum, Guardian of Kastom, and Keeper of the Black Scrolls of Rassilon. It was either open up a gallon of kava or a can of whoop-ass.

I'm going to decaffeinate starting tomorrow, regardless of how drowned I feel at work.

I always try and limit my self to 4-5 shells. Its a really good place to be and you know you wont overdue it. As for the energy drinks, yes they do help tremendously. And again no your not foolish, you must first make mistakes to learn from them. This too has happened to me, so dont worry your not alone.

FYI: the first time I had a frightening kava experience, I called Jeff from Fiji at 561-347-6800. He's a good guy to talk to. Kava is so nominal in his world.

Thought I was gonna have to cut back on the the Kava this week. Tired, run-down feeling and my eye lids became red, swollen and itchy. Turned out to be a viral infection so I'll prescribe myself some more kava.

I agree with the max 4-5 shells.  Anything good can be abused (even chocolate cake!), the key in all things is to know when to stop partaking in a good thing while it still has only positive effects on you - you don't want to tip that scale. It's just not worth the risk.
Also, I use no more than 2 tbsp of kava per 8 ounces of water. Economical and a pleasant but not overpowering amount.
I also only drink Solomon and avoid the hardcore stuff (like Wow, Chief's, etc) - I just want a nice unwind of the day, not to get kavarunked.
Don't swing for home runs.  Enjoy singles and doubles!

Ive done it too. There is no real reason to overindulge though. With most substances, the more you take the higher you get. Simple math. In my experience kava does not work like that. There is a max effect and after that all effects from drinking more shells are physical and willingly turn rather unpleasant. headache, stomache upset etc..

Well friends, the itchies have come to my door this week as well. Out of the blue last Saturday, I got an itchy face - lasted 5 hours. I layed off until tonight (Thurs), made another batch of hiwa and after the 3rd shell, face and chest itch are back. I have been taking niacin (1 pill a day 250mg), but sad this is going on. How long is the normal layoff to get back to where all is in stasis again?. Should add I have been drinking 5x a week (4-5 shells per session) for the last 3 months. Any personal notes to ref here?

that really is alot of kava i think! After drinking that much, do you still really need 4-5 shells to feel good? or are you going for krunk every time? I wouldn't go for kunk 5 days a week for 3 months straight.

when i first started drinking i was all excited and was trying different kinds and drank alot every day and then i started developing spots on my body that felt badly bruised but no redness or marks at all. it was all down my back and my ribs and on my arms. I thought i was gonna have to swear off kava but it finally went away (with the help of benodryl) and i've learned that moderation is the key.

If i got krunk one night i don't think i could even want to get krunk the next night. its like getting drunk two nights in a row. too much.

Yeah, I had back surgery 5 months ago, and found kava to be a great sub for the muscle relaxer and pain killers prescribed post surgery. Not much of a recreational application for me, just the relaxation element. I don't want to go back to the pharmaceuticals, so hoping someone has some tips to get me back on track. Might it be the strain (hiwa) or just too much in my system, with a required layoff?
