Soak Kava overnight?

Hi everyone,

Would it be alright to let a batch of kava soak overnight in a cool dark place besides a refrigerator? I have noticed the longer I soak it the more potent it becomes. I really don't want any mold or anything to form so any input would be greatly appreciated....

What's the longest you guys have soaked for w/ no adverse effects? and also did you notice an increased potency w/ the longer soak duration?

Thanks for any replys...~Lane(smiley: happy)

Hi Lane75,

I am glad you asked the question.  Lately, I have been soaking my kava overnight in the fridge. I have put it in a cool dark place overnight, but that was in the winter and it was fine. I live in Florida and with the temperatures in the 90s, there are no cool dark places. But I wonder if there is a difference. I am a newbie so I really didn't notice a difference. Last night, I debated over whether to leave it out or not.  I put it in the fridge to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the reply Jerz Gurl.

I'm pretty much a newbie too so no worries your not alone :).

Most of the time I let it soak for bout a half hour and strain/squeeze it pretty good but this one time I forgot about it and it ended up having a soak for roughly 5 hours and it was the same amount/brand of kava but had a more potent kick to it. So I don't know it might have been a fluke but I was just inquiring if the soak time really does enhance potency. I'm gonna experiment a bit more w/ it and see what happens...

Take care..~Lane (smiley: happy)

When I first started drinking have I soaked it for 30-45 minutes. I don't bother anymore. I just make sure to squeeze the hell out of it when I'm making a batch. I'll kneed and squeeze the kava for anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes depending on my mood. I've had both strong and weak batches when using the soak method. I've had strong and weak batches when just squeezing and kneading. For me, the squeeze and knead has given me more consistent results. There has been a much smaller variation between the strength of the brew.
