I assume it's really mostly with dried ground. However, a lot of the goodies ate in the solids on the bottom. That's because only some of the kavalactones come out into the water along with the resin during the squeezing process. The rest are in the solids. This is why the toss and wash method requires less kava.

From what I've been lead to understand, kavalactones aren't water soluble, so they sink. But, the brown water on top is still kavalactone enriched.

I have no idea, but I would speculate that when fresh kava is made, they don't end up with so many solids, but it's so potent it doesn't matter.

Even with fresh Kava you will still see a layer of separation if you let it sit. I've noticed this myself when using fresh frozen. Prepared kava is simply a suspended solid in water. Kavalactones are found in the resins which are more bound to the fibers of the root and definitely insoluble in water. I would dare to say if you let the solution sit for long enough you would see a complete separation between the water and the solids. To answer your question as to the percentages, I can't really give a solid number, but I'd say most of the kavalactones are located in the heavier particles at the bottom. Not all, but most.



The solids are the particles I seek after dehydration. It's where instant comes from.

I get the same result when I make grog. I mix it all before pouring a shell and mix my shell up before each chug. That way i see it the stuff on the bottom is basically what would constitute most instants on the market. Basically the oils and very fine particles that give kava it's punch.

I have yet to reach any real conclusion that less sediment = better. My bet is the good stuff is on the bottom.
