What's new

the "stir and chug" method....

Now, I will forewarn you that this method is VERY disgusting and 10 times worse than even the stoutest Kava drink, but it is effective and good for those looking to conserve their stash. I tried this once last night and once again just now. You just stir your kava ina glass of water and take it down.... its NASTY but very potent, almost twice as strong as even the most potent squeezed beverage I have made... I am getting full krunked effects from just 2 tbs, that would require 3-4 tbs in a squeezed drink to get.... but I do not know if it is worth it,being as the gritty texture is almost unendurable (I puked in my mouth 3 times while getting the last bit down)...anybody tried this and have thoughts on it? I have not noticed any intestinal blockage or anything of that nature, things seemed to flow just fine in my morning commune with the porcelain god...

I did not have any problems last night or today...zero zip zilch digestive problems. I think you might be overreacting when you say that... The person who convinced me to try this method uses ONLY it and has not mentioned any digestive problems either...the fact still remains it is a disgusting experience and one I will not be repeating. Kava is cheap enough already, I might try this again if I get some truly POWDERED root with no pieces in it...but for now I much prefer the smoothness of a good Kava drink that has been strained...

Do you think that Pacific Islanders have been straining kava for 3,000 years because it wasn't necessary?
I could walk into a casino and win two times in a row, but that doesn't mean that you always win at a casino.

Well, they have enough of the stuff to not worry about conserving ones stash, plus as I said the entire experience is VERY unpleasant, doesnt kick in as fast as the strained/squeezed drink, and you burp up the cinnamony kavalactone taste for 20 minutes afterwards.... I could see why they would strain even though it is not necessary.

Isn't it the same as taking the ground root pills? I used to take kava pills for insomnia ~10 years ago and ~2-3 of those was good enough to put me asleep after 20 minutes.

I haven't received any yet so I don't know how fine this stuff is, but maybe you could put it in a blender to make it finer so it goes down easier.

It has to be really really fine to pass through the human digestive track. A kava pill has a very small amount of root fiber in it. Many kava pills are not pure kava root even if they label them as such so you're actually eating less than that tiny amount of root. Truth is you can never be completely sure what else they put in them. Drinking a table spoon of straight root fiber is something else. Some kava isn't ground that fine so it's a risk.

im not saying go and try to choke down some sizable pieces of root... that would probably be nigh impossible..the coarse ground powder is nasty enough, but it IS very effective. I wont be trying it again until I get some micronized powder...

Why would they not put 100% kava root in the pills? Kava isn't that expensive and these were ~$15-20 /btl, IRC. I have no reason to doubt that they were pure kava. 3 of them would be a gram which should be about a teaspoon.

Where do you get this idea? You can swallow all kinds of large objects and it will pass through quite easily. How do you think drug mules ply their trade? I'm sure psyllium seeds (commonly used in intestinal cleansing programs) are larger than the ground particles in this kava powder and that stuff passes through no problem. I see no problem drinking this stuff.

Canon, have you tried a blender?

At the end of the product description for Hawaiian Kava Center Mo'i it states that straining is an option. It's micronized to the point of almost being powdery. I will admit that under less than ideal circumstances I have tried the stir and chug method. I can't say that I care to repeat it. It's very hard to get down almost made me sick. Only for those with cast iron stomaches.

There might be a few that are. Many of them have other things in it in some miniscule amount. Stuff like St. John's Wort and gingko. I found one that even had Blue Lotus in it.

If they were labelled as such then they weren't, strictly speaking, kava pills. The ones I was taking were kava pills and only contained such.

When I was first making kava, the straining bags I used would let too much root through and the brew would be thick to the point of gelatinous. This is also when I would get kava dermatitis: red, rashy, scaly, over-sensitive skin.

its not any fun for sure, and I used a blender the second time, seemed to make it even more unbearable, mind you this was coarse ground but still mostly powdered root. I can imagine trying to take on something even more coarse and ending up with my head in the toilet for the next 30 minutes.

I actually use this method when my stash is running low, it is disgusting and disconforting on the stomach but does work in small well. i use 100% limeade to mix it in which is very sour and covers bad taste i also use it to make my kava as well
