What kind of bag do you use?

I don't like mixing in the blender.  It just takes away from the experience for me, so I just soak and squeeze.  I've been using the coarse weave bags from Nakamal at home, but they are very large weave.  I've tried extremely small weave bags and not really loved that experience, mainly just using those to strain the coarser bits about from the Nakamal bag.  Anyone have a favorite bag that they would recomend?

I've used BKH's muslin bag since day one, barring the few occasions I was forced to use a nylon sock or t-shirt. I like it for the most part, but that cloth very effectively strains even micronized blends, which is a blessing and a curse. I'm probably not the best person to answer this, as I haven't strayed far off the path of BKH's supplies.

I use a nylon produce bag to great effect. I can't remember the brand currently, but I'm very happy with the results. finely ground or somewhat chunky, it strains well.

I soak and squeeze as well but I do the blender beforehand, I like how foamy the bowl of kava gets when I use a blender. Just feels like I'm getting more out of it. I dunno.

On topic I use a Fijian strainer bag that you can get from kick back with kava. They've been the best strainers in my opinion. I like the muslin bags as well but I find they fall apart too easily, maybe that's just my ridiculously violent way of squeezing and wringing out kava lol but the Fijian strainer bags are pretty hefty. It's a fairly wide weave so might not be what you're looking for. With micronized products I just tie the kava in panty hose and then put that in the Fijian strainer bag and I'm set to make some kava.

I had a generic muslin bag, but the by my second month it tore. I make my own bags out of T-shirts now. I make them rugged so I can abuse the hell out of them. lol

Making them also adds to the experience.

Ive had best results with a nylon jelly strainer. I like for a lot of particulate to get through to the final product.

I've been using pantyhose for years and they always seem to work well for me, except the last time when they busted open and made a huge mess. They're cheap, easily replaceable and I can get them at any number of stores in the area. Still, after the last "kava explosion" I may think about investing in some of these fancy strainer bags that everyone's talking about.
EDIT: I should add that I never knot the hose - too much of a pain to untie. Instead, I collect the rubber-coated twist-ties (not the ones with paper that fall apart in the kava - learned that the hard way) which makes tying and untying a cinch.

I started off using pantyhose (which I doubled up to prevent ripping), but like Buddhacide I like to get more particles in my kava than that allows. To me the fijian kava strainer I bought is much better. I tie a knot in the end and toss it in a bowl and knead away. Getting the knot back out isn't as bad as with a nylon, but still a hassle that most might choose not to do.

I bought two, but so far haven't had any reason to use the second one. They seem pretty tough.

Katiedid, email us your address and we'll send out a free reusable strainer bag. It's weave is perfect for fine ground powder, and it's durable enough to squeeze the hell out of, time and time again. We are going to carry these, at some point...
Aloha~

Fijian strainer for me.  They let the good stuff thru and keep the woody part in.  They are really tough considering how dainty looking they are.

I've had good experience with the pantyhose I've presently got (although I had a pair that seemed to leech some kind of chemical into my kava. blech.) I tried BKH's strainer bag, but I found I couldn't squeeze all the liquid out or something. Maybe I'm not strong enough, or I use too much powder... But I like the flexibility of hose.

I've tried BKHs bag too. I love the rest of their products, but I had the same experience as Letharia. It doesn't quite work for me...I guess I'm looking for a medium weave.  I did e-mail Paradise Kava to give their product a try.  I'm excited that  a company took the time to respond.  That was nice.

The Paradise Kava bag was great! It was exactly what I was looking for as a happy medium. A little bit of "grit", but not too much and the kava definitely still gets through.

Paradisekava, my wife dislikes that I use our nylon produce bags (which work fantastically btw) so I'd like to get something I can dedicate solely to straining. I'm wanting to order some of your product soon, is it possible to throw one in with my order? I'm not asking for a freebie btw, I'd like to compensate for the cost. Could we work this out somehow?
